Autofac's gonna be a new one to you, but the names behind it—Juan MacLean and Marcus Lambkin, a.k.a. Shit Robot—most certainly are not. The DFA house, disco, and techno veterans have long been friends, sharing bills around the world, vocalists on records, engineers on mixing boards. For a while now, they've also been collaborating in the studio, and it's with tremendous honor that we get to be the label that presents the world with the fruits of their labors.
Souls on Ice is a snarled, fierce, aggressive four-tracker, all of it recorded live, which gives it a distinct loopiness and patience. The EP starts off on a bumpin' techno tip and slowly drifts towards a spacier, groovier house sound. Charged and punchy, it's the kind of dance floor kick in the pants only wizards like Juan and Marcus can deliver.
