Appropriately, Sad City makes music with the potential to bring you to tears. Though this isn’t your R’n’B heartwrencher, more like blissful minor key chord patterns, textures and the occasional sampled monologue. Released via a trio of Emotional Response, R&S and Meda Fury, this long awaited debut from the Glasgow based Gary Caruth is welcomed like the three kings baring gifts. Album opener, ‘Rain Call’ begins with some hot and heavy ad-libs that are met gracefully by elongated chord work. ‘Again’ is possibly the epitome of this sad electronica pursued by Caruth. Washy textures line the entirety of the track, pensive chords gradually chill closer to the bone and the not quite audible vocals add a hint of mystery to it.
