Culprit’s final release of 2019 is the label debut for one of London’s rising house/techno stars Laurence Blake aka Citizenn. London’s underground scene has played a vital role in establishing LA-based imprint’s identity through the years - straight from the start, when the likes of Jamie Jones, Matt Tolfrey and jozif ruled the roost. Citizenn carries on this proud tradition with two songs of vibrant ideas and top-notch execution.
The title song is the propulsive subterranean groove, typical of Citizenn’s work for the likes of 20/20 Vision, Madtech and Crosstown Rebels. In the nod to Culprit’s slinky deep sensibility, Citizenn collaborates with Liz Cass on an evocative vocal that fashions “Someone” into something unique in the artist’s catalogue. “Square Baths,” with its recurring dark melodic motif and the immense rumbling low-end make for a perfect moody companion piece.
One of Culprit’s in-house producers, Rome/LA’s Lorenzo Dada contributes a deeper, ethereal take on the lead track. Lorenzo’s musicianship shines through with an original piano melody and beautiful synth work that elevates the release to new heights.
