Rocksteady Disco's newest recruit is Eddie Logix. He's been at the heart of the Detroit underground for over 15 years, most recently with his Technically Yeah live hardware nights, a grip of ambient and hip-hop releases, engineering for Assemble Sound. He’s one half of left-field funk-hop duo Mega Powers with Pig Pen, and of BLKSHRK alongside Blair French, who first appeared on Rocksteady Disco back in 2016 on ...For Todd.

Placebo Palace is Eddie's first solo dance EP, combining all of this experience into a diverse offering for discerning dance floors. The EP leads with “Que Locos”, a tropical house banger driven by brass and Latin-Jazz piano. “Baby Girl” rounds out the A side, with a dusty R&B vocal sample coupled with a massive and unexpected bassline. The B side is darker and deeper, starting with the frantic Afro-Jazz-Deep House “Sunday Palaver”. Closing the EP is “Bottle Rocket”, a psychedelic surf rock-tinged disco-not-disco chugger, with live guitar by Daniel Monk and electric bass by stphn-b. More forward thinking music from Detroit via Rocksteady Disco!

    2. B. Incapable (Crooked Man Pt. 3 Mix)

Roisin Murphy’s disco-hued ‘Incapable’, created in partnership with long-time collaborator DJ parrot, was met with universal acclaim when it was released in early June. A masterclass in effortless cool, shuffling house beats meets Murphy’s pirouetting vocal which moulds and morphs across 8 perfect minutes, whilst lyrically it brilliantly subverts the tropes of the traditional heartbreak lament. Alongside the original, the B side also offers his darker, deeper ‘PRT 3’ remix that puts a heady spin on the track, heavy on a shape-shifting, reverberating bassline in constant flux.

    1. A. Rip Tide
    2. B. Rush Hour

Romanian raised Paco Wegmann and French artist Sirus Hood collaborate to unleash the high-octane Rip Tide, featuring their inspirations of the seminal Chicago House movement, released on Hot Creations this January.

Rip Tide launches into a jackin bassline, a frenzied vocal sample drops into an addictive loop interjected with rolling claps and classic rave-soaked synth that doesn’t let you catch your breath. On Rush Hour the intensity continues, sumptuous sub-bass combines with an unfurling arrangement of hi-hats and tightly executed synth that will release endorphins on the dance floor.

Romanian newcomer Paco Wegmann’s sound is based on a solid diet of 909, Chicago and Detroit records. Already with releases on Hottrax, Elrow, Viva Music, Kwench, Savor to name a few, expect plenty more to come from this talented producer who sees electronic music as a culture rather than a trend. Sirus Hood started his DJ career at the age of 18, becoming a regular DJ at the best Parisian clubs. A self-taught producer, his music was initially picked up by the likes of Amine Edge & DANCE’s CUFF and Claude VonStroke’s Dirtybird. Following DJ residencies at Sankeys Ibiza, Eden Ibiza, Ministry of Sound London and both Social Club and Showcase in Paris, his talents were fully displayed to audiences across the globe. Today he continues to spend countless hours in the studio and his diverse range of music can be found on Rawthentic, Cajual, Sola, Wow! And Under No Illusion.

    2. B1. O.H. Groove
    3. B2. Guidance

Michael James debuts on Infuse to open the New Year, delivering three original productions in the form of his ‘Fat Earth’ EP.

A surging name within the scene, Manchester’s Michael James is quickly becoming a staple name in the record bags of some of the biggest names in the game following an impressive string of releases via the likes of Constant Sound and sub-imprint Constant Black, Mulen Records and Hoarder. Taking inspiration from artists including Ricardo Villalobos and Zip through to Raresh, Rhadoo and Barac, the blossoming producer, DJ and digger has forged a sound combining his own take on house, minimal and dub techno – resulting in appearances at the likes of fabric (London), S.A.S.H (Sydney) and DC-10 (Ibiza), not to mention his long-standing residency at The Zoo Project. Opening 2020, here we see James’ latest effort as he touches down on FUSE sister label Infuse to reveal the infectious three-track ‘Fat Earth’ EP.

Title cut ‘Fat Earth’ opens proceedings in slick fashion, fusing skipping hats and evolving electronics amongst swinging rhythms, whilst ‘O.H. Groove’ ups the energy as rumbling low-ends and slinking percussion licks go to work revealing a lively effort perfect for the peak time or the after-hours. Last up, ‘Guidance’ sees out the package as tripped out vocal snippets interject amongst sweeping synths and rich drum shots, rounding out an impressive label debut from the blossoming UK talent.

    1. A1. Fill Callings
    2. A2. Chaboi
    3. B1. Fill Callings (Floog Remix)
    4. B2. Anak

Frequent collaborators Shaun Reeves and Tuccillo team up on Archie Hamilton’s Moscow Recordings, bringing three intricate cuts plus a remix from Premiesku member Floog.

Both artists have been releasing music for over a decade with Tuccillo making appearances on Inermu, Holic Trax, Djebali and 8bit, whilst Reeves initially burst onto the scene via Raum…music and Wolf + Lamb before co-founding Visionquest where he still continues to release the bulk of his work. That label is also where the pair initially joined forces and, aside from an outing on One Records and Shantu, where the two have consistently collaborated. Following the release of Archie Hamilton’s debut album, Reeves and Tuccillo now join Moscow Recordings alongside artists like Argy, Noha, Mennie and Floog.

Meandering onwards, ‘Fill Callings’ is a deep and dubby cut with pulsating bass, skipping hats and metallic whirrs. Next, ‘Chaboi’ ups the tempo, implementing a compelling groove whilst deep chords are joined by various tiny elements that pan throughout the mix, leading into ‘Anak’ – a stripped back number with a mean bassline, crystalline stabs and murmuring vocals. On remix duties, Romanian producer Floog adds extra thud to ‘Fill Callings’ courtesy of pronounced kicks and a reverbing snare that drives the track forward whilst a combination of distorted effects squelch and rattle.

Bar Musica's fourth EP is a fascinating one from Jesse Marcell with a remix by Pier Bucci.

El Calvario De Los Indecisos opens up with intense minimal sounds, relentless drum and bass loops tying your mind in knots. All manner of dark and grubby sounds and effects scuttle across the groove and make this a late night head wrecker.

Pier Bucci then steps up to smooth things out and layer in some more soft and soulful late night chords. It flip the cut into a more dreamy number for trance inducing late night sets.

Last of all, Marcell offers La Fe' with its high tempo drums, pressurised kicks and sweeping sense of minimal tech funk really getting you deep in the groove.

This is a superb offering from this vital label.

    1. A1. Valentine
    2. A2. Back Of My Heart
    3. B1. I Heard You
    4. B2. Back Of My Heart (Patrice Scott Remix)

Crackazat needs little by way of introduction having released some of the biggest soul-drenched, deep and jazzy cuts on the likes of Local Talk, Futureboogie and Z Records. Bristolian (now relocated to Sweden) Ben Jacobs wears his jazz influences proudly on his sleeve. His one-man live show sees him killing bass guitar and keyboards moves over the top of MAW-esque beats creating that holy grail of emotive, heartfelt music which never loses sight of the dancefloor. Ben already has two LP’s under his belt, as well as a host of remixes for Mousse T and Peven Everett, Joey Negro and Tom Misch and we’re proud to announce him for his Freerange debut.

Opening track Valentine acts as a calling card for what Crackazat does best.... Fat, stripped back, raw, swinging house beats straight out of the Mood II Swing handbook. Live bass and jazzy piano bring an unashamedly musical edge that can’t help but bring the heat to the Dancefloor. Tried and tested by Jimpster, this one is a serious head turner and shows why many are citing Ben as a talent who is knocking hard on the door of Kenny and Louie.

Next up we have Back Of My Heart, a more tracky affair with shuffling beats, deep, rising pads and side-chained arpeggios pumping with a fat kick drum. One to get well and truly lost in at 4am.

Flipping over we have I Heard You which uses a similar sonic palette to Valentine: crisp beats with driving offbeat hats, lush piano chords and soaring Moog line all making for a serious ear-worm of a tune which you can’t help but bounce to.

Finally, Detroit luminary Patrice Scott gets busy on the remix of Back Of My Heart. The Sistrum label boss brings his Midas touch, delivering a deeper, late-night mood which subtly evolves, introducing new piano parts and bassline whilst keeping the rolling, unrelenting groove on track.

When was the last time EDMX served you what you expected? Maybe you drop the needle down in anticipation of some slick boogie-inflected synth pop and get walloped in the face with hellfire techno. Perhaps you were itching for body-popping electro and got cerebrally hijacked by pagan coldwave.

On this latest magnum opus, his first on Queen Nanny. Ed Upton is in the mood to get down low in every sense of the word. On the frequency range, this is a record dripping with lard-fed bass at every turn. The arrangements too are devilishly low in channel count – raw riddims with just a few key ingredients to do the necessary damage. Then there are the tempos, which predominantly set cruise control at 90 BPM and glide.

It’s not hard to tell where EDMX’s inspiration has sparked from on this album – in the spirit of celebrating the compatability of oddball sonics from all corners of the globe, he’s patched his sound into a specific vibe and struck gold with some of the most distinctive riddims you’re likely to hear all year.

On the night of 15th June 2018, three friends, Dave Okumu, Tom Herbert and Tom Skinner came together to perform a selection of deconstructed compositions in an improvisatory format at The Crypt in Camberwell, south-east London. Their shared history as musicians stretches back to their formative teenage years when they would congregate to learn how to play the music which had impacted so heavily on their lives, resulting in a distillation of funk, soul, pop, metal, classical, punk, hip hop, dance, folk, electronic and world music, filtered through the prism of the endlessly resourceful, inventive and expressive language of jazz.

Their individual and collective journeys have woven them into the fabric of contemporary music through their work with artists as diverse as Adele, Grace Jones, Anna Calvi, Amy Winehouse, Sons Of Kemet, Kano, Lianne La Havas, Zero 7, Ed O’Brien, Jack De Johnette, Jessie Ware, Yoko Ono and Polar Bear. Their personal visions have come to fruition via their own projects, namely Okumu and Herbert’s Mercury-nominated The Invisible and Skinner’s solo outing as Hello Skinny.

Somehow, that informal night in Camberwell would represent the closing of a circle and the beginning of a new chapter for these three musicians.

After a blistering debut on Hot Creations with the irrepressible ‘Games’, released in November last year, Infinity Ink are back with ‘Infinity’ on Crosstown Rebels. A momentous slice of Cosmic Garage that is about to transform your summer forever!

Long-term friends and cohorts Ali Love and Luca C have succeeded with something quite extraordinary in their new production guise as Infinity Ink. Already amassing a legion of support and an escalating fan-base their unique cosmic take on garage has struck a chord with the dance-floor and beyond. ‘Infinity’ has been one of Crosstown Rebels most highly anticipated records of recent times. A smattering of DJ’s, from Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler, Damian Lazarus, Lee Foss and Art Department have been championing its intoxicating qualities to nigh on sonic-hysteria over the past few months. Luca and Ali’s anthemic ‘Infinity’ is set to reach epidemic proportions this summer!

‘Infinity’ is an incredibly hooky slice of left of centre underground house, which encompasses elements of garage, through a hallucinatory resonance that cleverly maintains its notion of pop-sensibility. Ali’s evocative trademark vocal phrasing faultlessly compliments the monstrous disco bass line and intoxicating melody. A perfect unison that culminates in a piece of music that is pure hedonistic joy!

When remixing such a ground breaking piece of leftfield garage, who would be more suitable than Todd Edwards, and here he goes the extra mile to deliver arguably his best remix of recent years. The remix king of hypnotic staccato garage, Todd takes ‘Infinity’ to the next level and whisks you away to The Raleigh at WMC ‘96! On the flip, the guys jack the groove and deliver another killer in the guise of ‘House of Infinity’. A superb compliment to ‘Infinity’, this is for more peak-time play, as disco fills, jacking hi-hats and Ali’s hypnotic vocals mesmerize the listener into a spellbinding state of dance-floor bliss.

Ali Love’s prolific career has witnessed him produce two artist albums; several hit singles, and provided the vocals on hits by The Chemical Brothers, Justice, M Craft and Hot Natured. Luca C, formally of Luca C & Brigante fame, has been producing music under various guises and in various band for years and has recently co-written and produced a track on Jamie Jones’s latest album. Besides working together as Infinity Ink, Luca and Ali are working on a project with Jamie and Hot Creations – more news to be announced soon. So now, with Infinity Ink as the combination of their extraordinary talents, the future is looking very bright indeed for Luca and Ali.

Next up on Crosstown Rebels is the hauntingly beautiful release 'Sabor' from the Tel-Aviv based duo Red Axes, with Brazilian-born Abrao on vocals, and featuring a brilliant Isolée remix to boot!

Give your sounds some room and blades and it will float above the land”. Red Axes

Title track 'Sabor' is an emotive and intricate composition. Spoken in his foreign tongue, there is a soothing and enchanting element to the vocals of Abrao. The variety of instruments and effects could easily have resulted in something disjointed, but all elements flawlessly come together. The instrumental version is complemented by a remix from highly respected Isolée, enhancing its depth and delivering an astute and well-crafted rework that he is famed for.

Red Axes is made up of Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi. Starting off in the band Red Cotton they have spent time living in Amsterdam and touring the world, and are now once again based in Tel Aviv. They have released on Correspondant, Klasse Recordings, Hivern Discs and their debut albumBallad Of The Icewas released in 2014 on I'm A Cliché. This year saw them start their very own label Garzen Records. Born in Sao Paulo, Abrao has been creating and producing music for thirty years and can now be found performing live with the Red Axes.

Isolée is German-born Rajko Müller and has been creating music for over twenty years. He has released on labels including: Playhouse, Freundinnen, Diynamic Music and most recently Pampa Records. Resident Advisor ranked his 2005 album ‘We Are Monster’ #53 in their Top 100 Albums of the ‘00s.

Once in a while a record causes such a wave of excitement, it brings new vitality to dancefloors and generates fresh enthusiasm for the underground scene. ‘Without You’ is one such record, brought to life by the great talents of Art Department, a duo causing deep tremors due to their pioneering use of quivering bass, haunting vocals and fiery kickdrums.

The A side features the vocals of techno’s wonderchild, Seth Troxler, as well as Kenny Glasgow (one half of Art Department), his voice a major element of what makes their records so special. ‘Vampire Night Club’ layers the duo’s trademark synth sounds with an eerie and skin-pinching atmosphere. A truly mesmerizing record that gives the perfect introduction to the Art Dept sound on Crosstown Rebels, pre-empting their debut full length album on the label next year.

The double A and title track ‘Without You’ combines that unforgettable seductive bassline with a lingering vocal call. This record could have been made in the future as much as the past, its simplicity and depth the key to its appeal. Calls for its release have been heard for months and now have been answered with an extended 12” mix.

Art Department is the brainchild of Canadian duo Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow. With musical credentials dating back two decades, together they have constructed their own take on contemporary house music that has caught the attention of some of the leading figures of the current movement. With an album slated on Crosstown Rebels next year, this single is the first in a long line of raw futuristic bullets destined to cause a storm with an international audience.

For many the ultimate visionary and sonic wizard, Mathew Jonson delivers a rare solo album for Crosstown Rebels with ‘Her Blurry Pictures’, encompassing a new evolution in his rhythmically complex and timeless approach over eight fluid and rich compositions.

Although distinctive as Jonson's production style, ‘Her Blurry Pictures’ marks the end of a phase for the Canadian in which he used music as a tool of escapism and looking within. Predominantly made in his studio in Berlin in 2012.

Her Blurry Pictures’ maps his coming into focus, moving into a new chapter of reflection, remaining present and finding a deeper connection.

Rising to prominence over a decade ago, Mathew Jonson has cast shadows on others in his field through a distinctive voice that offers a rare fusion of populist intensities and nuanced musicality, spanning elegant electronica, emotive techno and the universal laws of house.

Jonson is one of the most well respected names in electronic music with past releases on M_NUS, Perlon and his own Wagon Repair label. His first output in three years, the album follows two solo singles on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels imprint in 2012

Jonson has recently focused on his Cobblestone Jazz outfit as well as Midnight Operator a raw, rough, up-tempo partnership focusing on dance floor bombs), each of which have earned him widespread success. This solo album is a true return to his roots with aplomb!

Last years massive groundbreaking anthem ‘Summertime’ finally gets released again with some fantastic remixes, courtesy of Rob Mello, Jamie Jones & Robert James, and SIS.

To say ‘Summertime’ was the record of 2009 is an understatement. A deluge of hype dogged the release after being broken at WMC and it didn’t disappear, getting played to the masses by every form of DJ until well after the year was out and named one of DJ Mag’s top Miami tunes ever. It now finally get’s remixed for this Summer with some stupendous remixes.

First up is London’s legendary Rob Mello, delivery a driving dirty house fueled remix with heavy Prince overtones. The production is impeccable, the groove unstoppable….unbeatable! Next up and Jamie Jones and Hot Creations label hero Robert James, take you back and house the crowd! Full of ominous bass lines and sinister stabs, this will have you pulling shapes before you know it, amazing!! On the flip and the magnificent SIS delivers an off kilter, driving, dubby rollercoaster ride of a remix, drifting in and out of the hypnotic groove as the beats swell in perfect syncopation.

Jamie has recently launched his new label Hot Creations, and has had some amazing releases by Robert James, Lee Foss, Burnski, himself and as Hot Natured (along with Lee Foss). Jamie is due to release a another new track on Crosstown this Autumn, ‘Paradise’ with a Art Department Remix.. and it’s a corker!

His unaffected instinct and sincere writing process are perfectly balanced by his meticulous craft—a rare quality among contemporary artists which promises a vast and fruitful oeuvre. This is universal music, transcending genre and taste level despite being wholly instrumental. Much like his ability as a DJ, pairing esoteric records to discerning dance floors worldwide, Marco's talent for producing the right voice in an emotive melody and dynamic arrangement is aspirational. Lord Of The Isles, a.k.a. Neil McDonald, has spent the better part of a decade steadily producing and releasing beautiful music. The ESP Institute has always wholeheartedly believed in Neil’s work ethic and his journey as an artist who constantly refines his vision, and when we inevitably approached in hopes of working together, we were enamoured by the sheer breadth and depth of work he had 'in progress’.
There are two types of artists. One internalises their process, endlessly perfecting their work while finding the endpoint a massive hurdle, in turn they produce immaculate yet very little art.The other is continuously inspired, so full of ideas they can barely work fast enough to articulate them all.The art becomes by-product of their larger trajectory and not just a collection of endpoints. Lord Of The Isles seems to be both, always in an evolving state of process where the work is constantly shed to make way for the new layer growing beneath, yet he holds his cards closely, cherry picking when and with whom he releases his art into the world.
Neil is simply prolific. He shared with us a vast catalog of unheard beauty, which over a long span of time was collaboratively shaped into his debut album “In Waves”.The title speaks to Neil’s process both intimately and from afar, it speaks to the emotional ebb and flow of the music itself, and ultimately it speaks to the listener.
This album will gift you with something new upon every listen, a concept that is
also gracefully interpreted into the album’s artwork by New York City artist, Hassan Rahim. The visceral aesthetic Neil portrays throughout these 15 songs is most certainly a landscape, an assemblage of intimate stories that, as a whole, give us this wider view of his intense drive, his multi-faceted quiver of skill, and his ultimate obsession... beauty.

Mark E has a vivid imagination and everybody knows it. This is his first offering for the ESP Institute. Laurentian Abyss undoubtably conjures narrative images from the depths of a man's soul, trudging through an array of rhythmic pulse, percussion and arpeggiation that resembles the inner workings of a grandfather clock, based on a disorienting 5/4 timing yet culminating in a singular stroke. On the flip side, the title track Emergency begins with the formula for which we know Mark E best, the ultimate tease winding us up for the big payoff, yet here we're forced into a cyclical trance which diverts our attention so effectively that we never actually receive what we've been waiting for, Mark's elusive drop. When a limitless producer such as Mark E, who's spread his talents widely across the face of dance music, seeks a home away from home in the ESP Institute, we consider it an honor to open our doors and present works that stray from not only his celebrated repertoire, but from reality in general.

For their sixth release, Let's Play House has headed Down Under to scoop up Australia's Fantastic Man, a second identity of DJ/producer Mic Newman, with which the Melbourne-based artist explores—and exposes—another side of his musical and stylistic skills. And the four original songs on the It's Essential EP most definitely mark a bit of a departure from Newman's trademark sounds: he's exchanged the thumping, peak-hour, hands-in-the-air chaos and messiness of hits like 2009's “Sizzled Sally” for a more refined and subtle breed of deep house.

The title track is crafted around a swinging keyboard line, horn samples, and jazz combo drum breaks. That's not to say it isn't made for the club—the throbbing bass line is hooky and infectious and will keep a crowd grooving all night long. “Wie Gehts” runs with the aesthetic of “It's Essential” a bit further, though instead of a keyboard riff, it builds around a smooth, ear-tickling guitar melody and a sultry vocal. The flip begins with the chillest tune of the bunch—“Sanctuary”—which certainly lives up to its name. This time, Newman springboards off a charming, dreamy piano line he underscores with an acoustic bass line and warm toms. Atop it all he spreads a thick layer of buttery synth warbles, making the track all the more magical and enchanting. Then “Scenic Route” kicks in and the decidedly clubby Mic Newman returns, although this time we're meeting him at 4 AM instead of midnight. The jam plods along with a deliberate yet stripped-down stride that's filled out with glistening synth stabs and a persistent hi-hat-driven beat. Finally, the song folds into itself, as though it's buckled under the strain of heavy eyelids and weakened muscles from a long night on the town.

Nearly two years ago we released Mys/Kela by a newish Stockholm-based producer who had put out a couple tracks on a couple labels―Studio Barnhus and Local Talk―owned by friends from around town. That producer's name was HNNY and a lot has happened since then, both to him and to us. He's gone on to crank out more L.T. 12"s as well as some he's dropped on his Yummy and Puss imprints, we've gone on to unleash a couple dozen more records and see the list of talent we've hosted at our parties grow to astounding length. Somehow, through it all, we managed to stay close with HNNY, who's real name is Johan Cederberg, and even book him for a couple NYC gigs. The friendship that began so humbly and gently in 2013 has blossomed.

So our timing to release the follow up to that classic collection of carefree, sun- kissed summertime grooves couldn't've been better. As we see the winter thaw into spring to expose greens below and blues above, we give you Solsidan/Alby, a sequel, of a sort, to Mys/Kela. Like the inagural EP, this one's got two originals, the first of which is heavy on smooth, looped-up vocals with no lyrics, and the second of which takes classic house tropes and romanticizes them to an almost saccharine point. Also like the first EP, there're two remixes included in this package. First one's by Avalon Emerson, a Berlin-via-San Francisco producer who's been making waves thanks in large part to a slew of impressive cuts for labels like Icee Hot and Spring Theory. The other's by Ana Helder, an Argentine from the Cómeme posse who has a penchant for injecting electro and disco and herky-jerky rhythms into her house tunes.

That first release was all about getting close and cozying up. This one's all about adventuring outside and exploring new corners and enclaves of our beautiful world. Enjoy.

Derrick Carter's seminal Sound Patrol album originally released in 1994, "Sweetened - No Lemon", will see a re-release in January 2016.

The alias provided a place for Carter to explore deeper and sometimes more atmospheric styles. The Sound Patrol record originally came out via Chicago's Organico label, while Derrick Carter's own Arts & Labour is handling the reissue. The triple vinyl re issue adds four new unreleased tracks. The whole album has been re mastered for 2016. This follows a limited edition sampler 12" released in 2015 which contained another 2 unreleased tracks.

Luke Solomon, Classic Music Company co-founder has these words...

"I was asked to write some sales notes on Derrick Carter’s Sound Patrol album quite some time ago.

The whole concept of writing sales notes for something that you are so emotionally attached to feels like a rather strange juxtapose. I get it - you need to sell things in order for people to hear them - and with something that holds retrospective context, it’s all about discovery and re-discovery.

I had finally got my head around actually doing it, weeks, late, but doing wit non-the-less, then Bowie went and died, and well, things like this kind of took a back seat. But then it got me thinking.

Do I want to write an in depth geek out of what was made where, and how it was, made, and what’s the back story etc etc….to be honest, I don’t have enough details.

Do I want to write about what kind of impact this album had on my life.

    Yes.

In light of recent events, the realisation of how important music is in my life, had become so incredibly prevalent. Firstly, if it wasn’t for this album, I would probably met Derrick under different circumstances, and our life long friendship may have been different. Classic may never have happened even. So with, with that in mind, this album is incredibly important to me.
From a musical perspective, well, I would say this was almost as important to me, but for slightly different reasons. It was the point where I felt an absolute and complete connection to dance music.

It was odd, different, left of centre, like nothing else around. It was emotive, clever, witty, sassy, long, contemplated, high, quirky…..all of the things I looked for in dance music, but never found in just one thing.

20 plus years later, this record is still incredibly important, not just to me, but to dance music. Especially right now, when I sit and listen to music on a day to day basis, and so much of it feels, well, calculated.

This was a time when people just made music just because they could.

Not just to drive gigs, not just to boost profiles …..and also not with a worry of whether it would connect with an audience, sell on vinyl, or get digital profile because the right names were attached.

I miss those days, and I long for dance music to be in that world again.

And that is why this album makes me happy.

You need it in your life more than ever

    3. B Reich - Six Pianos (Mr Scruff Extended Rework)

Re:works is the result of a groundbreaking project that sees the rich catalogue of Decca Classics being opened to some of the world’s foremost electronic producers, seeking to further establish the common ground between the historic and modern day aspects of musical composition.

Ranging from the experimental to the more recognisable 4/4 structures of house and techno, Re:works elicits the full range of emotion – from the heartbreaking to the ecstatic.

Taking on Satie’s celebrated ‘Gnossienne No.1’, former Planet Mu and Ninja Tune artist Starkey starts with little more than the stripped-back piano of the original piece, before steadily building to an epic peak through increasingly frenetic percussion and soaring florescent synths.

Also included on EP 2 is Henrik Schwarz’s version of Debussey Azzez ‘Vif Et Bien’, a dramatic restructuring of the many string parts for a unclassifiable record that is by turns playful and intensely dramatic. This "Azzez Kik Rework" version by Henrik is exclusive to the vinyl pressing. Finally, Mr. Scruff’s gleefully idiosyncratic 14-minute reinterpretation of Reich’s ‘Six Pianos’ creates an ever-evolving piano loop, sporadically dotted with neon-flecked glitches and harnessed by a chugging 4/4 beat.

1994 - Chicago producer Rick Lenoir has already released a slew of legendary records under many well known aliases and his House Jam label has been in business since '87. The Sanctuary Project is the nom de plume utilised by Rick for this particular killer Disco infected 4 track EP from that period. The keen eared among you will no doubt recognise some of the sample sources used throughout these tracks, Lenoir flips jazzy loops, chopped up vocals and lays it all out over some kicking drum programming, this is that style of sample based House that has the hardened dance heads and hip-hoppers unified, gritty, raw and brimming over with soul! The cuts featured on this EP will sit nicely with most contemporary sounds and shows how on the money Rick was in the mid 90's! The record has long been out of print and has been forever popular with the diggers out there, commanding a healthy price when available in the second hand stores and online. This reissue has been realised with the full involvement of Rick Lenoir / House Jam Records, Chicago and is 100% legit! Don't snooze, this one deserves a spot in any self respecting House heads record bag or DJ set, classic material made available again for 2017 - 'Running it’!

Driving, funky, stripped back and with that trademark KC drum programming 'Get On Up' kicks things off with an intoxicating mix of all the above and some loopy, dubbed out sax.. this one is pure heads down late night business! Flip the record over for 'Something Wrong', a solid grooving, gospel-esque monster that hits hard, classic! 1. A1 - Climaxx
    2. A2 - Doctor's Housecall
    3. B1 - Your Mind Is So Crazy (Original Extended Mix)
    4. B2 - Retrospace

Rick Lenoir and Larry Thompson aka Black Traxx dropped several volumes of their own brand of chopped up Disco sampling, deeper side of House. From 1991 through to 1994 the Black Traxx EP's were showing up in record stores, obviously giving respectful nods to other Chicago DJ's and producers the tracks included on the EP's contained a DIY spirit and rawness that were key ingredients. Lenoir, with the technical assistance of Gary 'Jackmaster' Wallace has revisited these classic releases for 2017 and the pair have turned in some special, exclusive extended versions of some of the highlights from the series.

Kicking off the first Black Traxx sampler is 'Climaxx', a stripped back, slow burning acid cut with more than a similarity to 'French Kiss' complete with ultra slowed down section in the middle. Far from a copycat, 'Climaxx' is it's own beast, a truly atmospheric track that tweaks in all the right places! 'Doctor's Housecall' is up next, a cut-up of Disco burner 'Doctor Love', a Chicago staple for sure. This is a brand new extended version of this jam, serious heat on this one, you all know the sample by now! Undoubtedly a nod to the legendary Ron Hardy and his mythical Muzic Box club, this one hits the spot.

On side-B we get a new version of 'Your Mind Is So Crazy' lifted off Volume III, this one's a pumping, breakbeat laced party starter. Vocal samples, synths and swinging drums all collide to form a real peak-time monster of a track, pure 90's style runnings! 'Retrospace' is the last track on sampler 1, it's a melding of Chicago House, breakbeat and bleeps. If you dig the sounds that emanated from Sheffield way back when, or the you're into the early hardcore sound pre-Jungle then this is the cut for you. Fast paced and funky, 'Retrospace' is a real hidden gem of a track, featured here in it's original form lifted from volume II.

This reissue has been realised with the full involvement of Rick Lenoir and Gary Wallace and is 100% legit! All exclusive extended edits have been made by Rick and Gary specifically for this release. Don't snooze, this one deserves a spot in any self respecting House heads record bag or DJ set, classic material made available again for 2017 - You can't stop it!

Lenoir, with the technical assistance of Gary 'Jackmaster' Wallace has revisited these classic releases for 2017 and the pair have turned in some special, exclusive extended versions of some of the highlights from the series.

This, the second sampler of Black Traxx cuts culled from the various volumes picks up nicely where part 1 left us off. If it's that raw, deep, basement Chicago House sound you're after then these guys have you covered. Kicking off with the 1993 remix of 'Dreamin' which is a sublime late night organ driven groover, this one ticks all the boxes if you dig that NY / NJ Garage sound, but with a Chi-town twist! 'Soul' is up next, lifted from 1993's 'The Soul Package' collection. A stripped back, vocal led jam steeped in atmosphere. This one is for the dancers for sure, no nonsense House music for heads and hips.

Flip it over and the B-side opens with 'Shake', a tough, gritty, percolating banger with a tribal-esque edge. This one's a weapon and almost fits into that Baltimore / Chicago 'ghetto House' mould. A proper club track, no prisoners taken. This one has been gently extended by Rick and Gary for maximum club pressure! EP finisher 'Party' is a much more subdued groove giving a respectful nod to the JB's with that infamous 'Paaaarty' chant. No frills in the best possible way this one's another solid club groove, pure food for hungry turntables and sound-systems. All of the tracks included on these samplers have been carefully selected, arranged, edited and extended for precisely these reasons!

This reissue has been realised with the full involvement of Rick Lenoir and Gary Wallace and is 100% legit! All exclusive extended edits have been made by Rick and Gary specifically for this release. 1. A1 Up Jumped The Devil (Louie Vega Remix)
    2. B1 Up Jumped The Devil (Louie Vega Dub)

House music maestro Louie Vega returns to Nurvous to remix Disco hit ‘Up Jumped The Devil’ by John Davis & The Monster Orchestra.
Originally released in 1977 on Sam Records, ‘Up Jumped The Devil’ featured music performances from some of Philly’s finest musicians, many of whom also featured on albums by the Salsoul Orchestra. Among them were Michael “Sugar Bear” Foreman on bass, drummer Charles Collins and guitarist Dennis Harris. Percussion came from Larry Washington, whilst Don Renaldo provided the strings and horns. With a rugged and rough rhythm section and blazing horn parts, the track was an absolute bomb amongst disco DJs at the time and continues to shine as a gem today.
Fast forward 40 years, Michael Weiss – son of Sam Records president and founder Sam Weiss – sends the track’s digitized elements to close friend and associate Louie Vega, whose timeless body of work includes trendsetting productions both as a solo artist and with his Elements of Life band and the more recent Soulfrito Project, and alongside Kenny Dope as Masters At Work. That aside, the New York native has always possessed a great knowledge and respect for R&B and Disco that laid the foundation of the current nightlife soundtrack.
2016 was especially big for Louie, as ‘Starring...XXVIII’ was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Dance / Electronic album category and was the source of multiple singles that lit up dance floors in clubs around the world. Louie is currently in the middle of a worldwide tour including DJ sets and full band performances.
Last year also saw Vega produce the smash remix of John Davis & The Monster Orchestra’s ‘Bourgie, Bourgie’, which was Traxsource’s No. 6 biggest selling download of 2016. He now returns, adding his unique production skills to another John Davis & Monster Orchestra classic from the Sam Records discography by remixing seminal disco-funk jam ‘Up Jumped The Devil’.
The Sam Records catalogue is owned and administered by Nervous Records, with which Louie has a long history dating back to the label’s signature tune ‘The Nervous Track’ by Nuyorican Soul. Nurvous Records is the sister imprint to Nervous Records, and is known for being one of the premier brands specializing in forward-thinking future club music.
John Davis & The Monster Orchestra ‘Up Jumped The Devil (Louie Vega Mixes)’ drops on Nurvous on 30th June 2017.

Chicago's Derrick Carter has long been a name steeped in House music mythology, a true original and a fierce DJ to boot.
His project with long-time collaborator Chris Nazuka from the mid 90's entitled Sound Patrol has always had a cult following and this long lost EP from 1994 is now finally seeing the light of day again!
'The music EP', released on Carter's Organico label still sounds totally streets ahead today, a sublime 4 tracker existing in the deepest recesses of the dance-floor.
Beautifully deep constructed house music filled with emotion and soul, 'The music EP' ticks a lot of boxes. In fact, it'd be surprising if this record ever leaves your bag.
So many moods are contained within it's grooves - melancholy, narcotic delusional happiness, sheer abandonment, it's all here. Essential is an understatement.
It would be extremely difficult to convey the majesty, deepness and beauty of these tracks in a press release. You merely have to listen, let it wash all over you. Open up.
A truly rare example of a near-perfect record, made available again. Don't snooze, don't front. This one deserves a place in your bag and in your heart.
