The man, the maestro, the mystery..... the Cube! That's right, you read that correctly, new music from the mind of one of Europe's freshest, not just one record, but two. At the same time. Right here. Versatile's main man (alongside Monsieur Gilb'R) returns to the fray with a hotly anticipated set of tracks that will surely stand alone in their uniqueness, but if you're reading this then you already know that. I:Cube has been busy, and he's keen to share the fruits of his labour with lucky us on this, the 120th release on Versatile. The sounds here are diverse, impeccably mixed, arranged and selected by the man himself and will surely find their way into the ears and minds of those who come into close contact effortlessly.

From the lost world dreamy trance of the first track 'Flutes Souterraines' to the acid indigestion inducing fingering of the 'Troglo Dance', to the deep cavernous bass-line creepings of 'Ramurc', this collection of six stellar cuts is a stunning return to form and a perfect example of why I:Cube should be regarded as one of the legends!

    2. B. Etire En Avant

Times of innocence; « Etire en avant » is a track by I:Cube from 1996 recorded straight to tape, when he was still doing music in his bedroom at his parents’ house. This slow jam contains french hypnotizing aerobic lyrics combined with a funk filtered sample, perfect for a tantalising disco sleaze
    late night set.

On the flip side, Abel from the infamous Red Light Records Amsterdam offers us a surprising re-jam based on the original « XXXX » track released  last year on the Oeil Cube E.P.
Speeding it up from 33 to 45 rpm, and then extending it for maximum effect.
From cinematic slow boogie to proper boogie monster.

    1. A. Mystery Man (Disco Mix)
    2. B. Mystery Man (Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold Special Disco Mix)

Techno, Disco, Italo, Electronics, House, Library, Cosmic and Ambient frequencies - These are the bedrocks of the Midnight Drive ethos and sound. A label shining a light on overlooked or unheralded creations and respectfully reissuing them for the contemporary audience. A label that respects and understands the connection between these disparate and sometimes forgotten forms of musical expression and celebrates them.

The third release on Midnight Drive takes us back to the heady days of 1984, New York City. We find Clive Stevens, a UK born saxophonist, producer, writer and poet whose career has seen him collaborate with artists like Manfred Mann, Gilberto Gil and Billy Cobham has assembled a truly staggering cast of international musicians known as 'Brainchild' to record an LP entitled 'Semjase' for Brazilian label Vôo Livre. The LP featured incredible session musicians whose CV's include work with some of the biggest names in popular music including Chic, Kate Bush, Miles Davis, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty and more (the list is endless). One track from this fairly obscure LP - 'Mystery Man' - somehow managed to find it's way into the hands of one of modern dance music's most intrepid DJ's and selectors, the legendary Daniele Baldelli. Based in Rimini, on Italy's Adriatic coast, Baldelli was famed for his Disco sets at beach-side, ultra-modern club 'Baia Degli Angele' where he was resident for a couple of years. Having served his time at the 'Italian Studio 54' throughout the late 1970's he built quite the reputation for being an adventurous selector, however, it was the second 1980's phase of his DJ career where things became even more open and interesting. Baldelli found himself helming a new wave of musical programming, where BPM, genre constraints and purist attitudes were ignored for wanton experimentation with records, a new feeling and style emerged from this called 'Cosmic', named after the club where he was now resident. This is where 'Mystery Man' comes in, now looked back on as a 'Cosmic classic' it was a special track that Baldelli favoured and can be heard in his self-distributed mixtapes from the time, it's a truly unique record melding electro-style programming with live percussion, synthesizers and vocals into a blistering slow motion Disco jam that stays with you for a long time afterwards and is the perfect example of the 'Cosmic sound'.

Here at midnight Drive we are honoured to be able to reissue this amazing track, but imagine our surprise when Clive Stevens emailed to say that he had the original 1984 session parts and that a remix could be an exciting proposition! We decided there could be only one choice for the remix, we needed people who understood the roots of the record, people who would respectfully reimagine the track while adding their own flavour, enter - Gerry Rooney and Joel Martin aka Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold. We gave them the '84 session parts with Clive's blessing and they turned in their 'Ever evolving ever transforming' remix. Gerry and Joel's pedigree is impressive, Gerry helmed the infamous Black Cock re-edit's label with DJ Harvey way back in the mists of time and is a respected DJ and selector across the globe. Joel is one half of the cult Quiet Village project and his Disco mixes as DJ Zeus and reputation as a world-class collector and DJ is unparalleled. Arguably the best men for the job! Velvet Seasons have carved out a deservedly celebrated reputation as remixers and editors of note over the last 5 years or so and this, their wondrous, sprawling, dubbed out mix of 'Mystery Man' is definitely a high-point. Midnight Drive is hugely proud to be able to offer this classic record with a brand new remix to you - our most trusted and valued listener.

The Finnish tropical troupe Maajo is back with a two-track EP. In contrast to the Afro-Balearic sound of their 2016 debut Tropic of Tulli, the new Defo / Mansaba EP is a step in a deeper and sometimes darker direction.

Defo kicks off the EP with a driving 5/4 rhythm. Reminiscent of Mark Ernestus’ Ndagga sounds, it is a tribal tune with Maajo’s signature ethereal disco elements.

Trevor Deep Jr.’s version straightens out the original’s unconventional time signature and focuses on a four-to-four beat and plenty of Berliner dub. The remix is a solid dancefloor tool, traversing the original like a train making its way through a dark rainforest.

The B-side is entirely covered by Mansaba, a 14-minute long journey into inwards. This studio jam, recorded largely live, is a wild mixture of polyrhythmic sequences, krautrock guitar licks, equatorial forest percussion and violin synths. The trip starts slow and soothing, sneakily picks up pace and keeps grow and growing, eventually exploding into a full-on tribal dance.

It’s a pleasure to get behind your friends from around world, in fact that’s the motive behind the breadth of the ESP Institute catalogue, but its truly a special feeling to represent your friends and your neighborhood at the same time. Producers Sonns (Alexandre Mouracade) and the mysterious Venice Beach native Tavish Graham are both long time friends of the ESP Institute family, we break bread, we take care of each other, and we cherish our collaborations more than anything, but we’re also neighbors. That said, ESP is proud to announce a homegrown endeavor, the debut of Sonns & Tavish. The two have long been stewards of the Los Angeles underground, but after loads of early morning banter and the camaraderie that comes with this smoke’n’strobe life, they’ve now committed their singular vision to print—two epic cuts that make us proud. Side A’s title track Trycksaker is a thumper, a mid-tempo big-drum-laden beast that chugs the whole way through carrying an array of eerie bleeps and fleeting sighs. Side B’s Roguish Days pulls together influences from various corners of the pair’s DJ repertoire, gelling a wicked breakbeat with a wormy acid bassline and even more exotic sighs, something that might possibly grow into a signature of sorts. This release is ready just in time for the Spring/Summer exploits, and we couldn’t be more proud to finally enjoy hearing these heavy-hitters in the club. Tip!

Released on TRAX in the golden year of 1989 Chicago's Virgo aka friends Eric Lewis and Merwyn Sanders, along with peers such as Larry Heard and Frankie Knuckles, gently pushed House music towards a more musically sophisticated realm that hadn't been explored previously. Across 8 tracks Virgo took us on a deep exploration of sound that was both masterfully arranged and produced and in direct contrast to a lot of the rudimental and jacking drum tracks that were the flavour of the day. There are few debut albums in the electronic sphere that can claim the title of 'classic', but this is surely one of them. A defining turning point in dance music, the dawn of what would later be referred to as the 'deep house' movement and sound is all evident with the grooves of this legendary record. Often listed as one of the 'greatest LP's of all time', this self-titled odyssey remains an essential, must have record that never loses it's magic, flawless in every way and still trailblazing today. Every home should have one. Remastered in conjunction with TRAX, repressed from the finest audio sources available. Often imitated, never replicated! 100% legit.

Jocelyn Brown should need no introduction at this stage, one of the US's most respected vocalists famed for bringing the gospel edge into contemporary R&B and soul music. Brown was the voice behind the celebrated Disco and Boogie outfit Inner Life, the focus of this 'Stars of Salsoul' volume. Cutting 2 LP's for the label in the early 1980's, Inner Life came strong with club hit after hit, working with the top producers, mixers, arrangers and studios of the day the group were gaining cult status with their records becoming the taste of the dancefloors at the Garage, the Loft, the Warehouse and everywhere and anywhere else in-between! Philly's Instant Funk are one of Salsoul's most well-known and respected groups. Appearing on the legendary TSOP label in 1976 the outfit was renowned for their ultra-tight musicianship and for backing Disco icon Bunny Sigler as his group. The late 1970's saw them sign to NYC's Salsoul label and this is the point where this compilation comes to life. 'I got my mind made up' was the groups opening shot on Salsoul and was a huge hit for them, helped in part by a super long, stripped back and funked out remix by Paradise Garage jock Larry Levan. This track and a whole host of others feature on this amazing compilation and snapshot of one of Disco's toughest rhythm sections, boasting all their hits and some stellar mixes from Levan, Tom Moulton, John Morales, Francois Kevorkian, Shep Pettibone and more! This whole selection features the mixes in their 12" glory, unedited, end to end, as intended.

Wave Stu might just be the Platonic ideal of icy, emotionally fraught synth-pop. On his debut release for Origin Peoples, Stockholm-based musician Michel Isorinne puts paragons of this style like Orchestral Manoeuvres In e Dark in his slipstream. Laced with spoken-word passages from films and television shows, Wave Stu weaves a loose tale about the nature of time, physics, and mortality that can be summarized by the key phrase, uttered by a woman scientist somewhere throughout the album, “magic is in the molecules...”

Isorinne essentially creates introverted minimalist symphonies in which sprightly synth leads peacefully coexist with melancholy, drone-y undercurrents. Throughout the record, Isorinne's melodies bear a fruitful contrast between the morose and the jubilant. He repeatedly places exceptionally delicate and beautiful tunes amid subliminal waves of pensiveness. It truly is a masterly balancing act. e zenith of this approach is Side A's closing track, in which gorgeous countermelodies intertwine like lovers on a tropical beach while a pistoning rhythm pumps up the libido. It's instant paradisiacal bliss.

Side B contains Wave Stu 's most cheerful, uptempo track yet it never bursts into full-on euphoria. Elsewhere, Isorinne reverts back to more somber moods: an eerie, methodical chiller full of quiet wonderment and subdued sparkle reminiscent of Casino Versus Japan, Plone, and others of their gnomic ilk; a low-key anthem in which '70s Vangelis grandiosi meets the workmanlike bass-synth chug of Ulrich Schnauss; an elegiac piece that conjures an intimate majes ; a bass-heavy dirge festooned with forlorn wisps of melodiousness.

The complex, paradoxical happy/sad pendulum at the heart of Isorinne's music lends Wave Stu a tingly resonance that will reward repeat listens. Please welcome an extravagantly rich synth-pop classic.

Man Power’s Me Me Me label proudly presents a very special new compilation, ‘We We We’, which will see all profits donated to the vital Help Refugees charity. The release boasts 25 new and exclusive tracks from a wide range of artists both new and established including Pional, Juan Maclean, Shit Robot, Medlar, ASOK, Ian Blevins and more. As well as the full album, two limited, vinyl-only samplers will also be released, with each featuring one exclusive track that is not available anywhere digitally.

The recipient of the albums profits, Help Refugees, is the leading UK NGO in a new movement of humanitarian aid, helping to plug the gaps in services not provided to those displaced by war. The man behind the compilation’s concept is Man Power aka Geoff Kirkwood, an established producer with credits for his off kilter mix of house, disco, ambient and techno on labels like John Talabot’s Hivern Discs, ESP Institute and Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondent.

Kirkwood says, “I have wanted to do a compilation of this nature for a long time. I’m incredibly lucky, as well as eternally grateful, to know so many talented artists who were willing to donate wonderful music towards this important cause.” The gratitude clearly flows both ways with Help Refugees director Philli Boyle saying “We are so grateful to Man Power and to all the incredible artists who have shown solidarity with displaced people across the world”.

The superb compilation kicks off in plaintive fashion with absorbing ambient tracks from Ian Blevins, Dharma and ASOK. Pale Blue’s ‘Eyes’ then brings deep and persuasive drums into the picture with thoughtful, sombre synths lingering up top. There is a real beauty to much of the selection here, as demonstrated by more wistful chords on Forriner’s lush deep house day dream ‘Sunrise in Bensham’, while jacking dance floor tackle comes from Pink Skull and Medlar’s pumping 909 drums and the pixelated melodic delights of Christophe’s rugged, Chicago-indebted jack track ‘Winder’.

Man Power himself pops up with an epic nine minute opus that is broad, sweeping house music at its most dramatic and evocative, and Pional’s ‘Night Charmer’ is a typically inventive cut with icy drones and dehumanised vocals. Big hitters like Shit Robot offer a heavy dose of dub house, while ‘Quantume Reach’ by Juan Maclean (feat Amy Douglas) is gorgeously off beat house with thoughtful chords and spine-tingling vocals with a poignant message.

This is a compilation jam-packed with a broad array of accomplished and standout sounds, and that it is all for charity only makes it an even more essential and welcome release.
The full album is released exclusively via Bandcamp on 4th May in exchange for a ‘no minimum’ donation to the charity, with the label asking to please give generously.

Having pinned to perfection the sonics of the Adriatic, Croatia’s Love International Festival bottles up their blissed out rhythms and sunrise sessions for the inauguration of Love International Recordings, fittingly, with a first release from UK producer Begin.

Bringing the Love International feel to wax and digital, the label will encapsulate the range of music the festival’s secluded party paradise has become renowned for. All the way from the balearic tinges of this first release, to the meatier house, techno and electro selections on show at Barbarellas.

Begin aka James Holroyd has a long history with Love International. Dating back to the early 2000s, Holroyd was one of the first guest DJs at the old Garden festival on the former festival site in Petrčane. Long serving Chemical Brothers tour DJ, Back to Basics resident since the 90's and Bugged Out co founder, Begin has long paid his paid his dues to the scene. In the words of Dave Harvey: “he’s been an absolute workhorse in dance music for time”.

Love International 001's tracks seemingly fit the festivals own daily lifecycle. From the docile guitar picking of meditative EP opener ‘Wood Trees’ to the slow daybreak funk of ‘Daypulse’ where synths pierce through the track like sun rays through the Adriatic dusk, the EP is a holistic reflection of what one might hear at one of the festival’s fabled sunrise sessions. ‘Garden Interlude’ ushers in a fresh burst of energy, with the revitalizing sounds of piano house, paired with warming neo soul vocals. ‘Into The Fun’ is a self fulfilling prophecy, closing the EP on a quintessentially balearic note.

Dropping on Rekids this May, Butch remixes ‘Good Luck’ - Basement Jaxx’s ubiquitous 2004 single featuring Lisa Kekaula.

Appearing on ’Kish Kash’, Basement Jaxx’s third studio album, the unforgettable single was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Dance Recordings category and also reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart and number 2 on Hot Dance Club Play in the US. ‘Good Luck’ also featured as the opening theme of 2004 anime movie Appleseed, Victoria’s Secret fashion show in 2003 and 2005, and a version without lyrics was used for the opening sequence of BBC’s UEFA Euro 2004.

Real name Bülent Gürler, German producer Butch has been a formidable force within house and techno for over two decades, enchanting crowds from all across the globe with his technical performances. Highly regarded for producing compelling grooves, his releases have appeared on labels like Desolat, Cocoon,
Rekids and Sei Es Drum, not to mention collaborating alongside Virginia, C. Vogt and Ricardo Villalobos (as Butric).

Receiving regular early support from Villalobos, Butch has provided three different renditions of ‘Good Luck’ and the ‘Remix’ is a rhythmic roller from the off, featuring numerous elements from the original whilst generating a cacophony of percussion as Kekaula’s iconic voice is chopped and looped – the result is highoctane and geared for the dancefloor. The ‘Dub’ strips things back, purely using segments of the vocal for instrumental purposes as a whirring bassline joins deep synths and mesmerising effects. Tying it all together, the ‘Drum Tool’ is a high-tempo percussive cut produced for peaktime DJ sets.

    2. B1. Hate Me (ft. Patrick Cash) (Instrumental)
    3. B2. Hate Me (ft. Patrick Cash) (Explicit acapella)

KDA’s ‘Hate Me’ (featuring playwright and poet Patrick Cash) is the freshest sounding British house music record for years. First given to a select handful of DJs, including Jackmaster, Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Tiga and Pete Tong (Essential New Tune on Radio 1), ‘Hate Me’ has dominated their sets since IMS. Originally slated as the first single on KDA's new label ‘The 35 Records’, ‘Hate Me’ has been picked up by BMG and will be available as a collaborative label release from 8 December (impact mid-Feb).

Whilst ‘Hate Me’s pulsing bassline immediately commands any dancefloor; the lyrics here provide a lot more food for thought than your usual club banger. Though echoing the spoken-word house records of old, in contrast ‘Hate Me’s’ lyrics are delivered in Cash’s British accent.

For someone who suddenly found himself atop a pop chart with his debut single, KDA draws from a diverse range of influences – taking in Masters at Work, J Dilla, Lone, The Beloved, Jill Scott, Tame Impala, Roisin Murphy, and Maya Jane Coles. KDA’s first track, ‘Rumble’, was the instrumental of summer 2015 played at every club from Panorama Bar to Warung before the dub started picking up daytime Radio 1 plays.

Simultaneously, KDA asked Katy B to write something for it just as Tinie Tempah spent that Summer free styling over it, and so ‘Turn The Music Louder (Rumble)’ was recorded. The song went from Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record in the World’, to No.1 in the UK Singles Chart (beating One Direction) within weeks. KDA received his Official Chart Award at Radio 1, where he chose to retain his anonymity in the publicity shots (but wore a t-shirt emblazoned with ‘Mum Is Proud Of Me’). ‘Turn the Music Louder’ has since achieved gold status, and sold in excess of 500,000 copies.

KDA’s second single was, ‘Just Say’, a collaboration with Tinashe that he both wrote and produced. Premiered by The Fader, ‘Just Say’ was championed by the likes of Radio 1 (Essential New Tune and Future Anthem), Complex, Popjustice, and Clash Magazine, earning a place on national radio and streaming playlists across the globe, and becoming the highest new entry on the Billboard Dance Charts, where it remained for a further 8 weeks.

In addition to writing and producing his own tracks, KDA has remixed a suitably diverse spread of artists, including Sia feat. Kendrick Lamar, London Grammar, Moby, Metronomy ft Robyn, CHVRCHES, Alma ft French Montana, Fatboy Slim, Brooke Candy, Kylie, Banks & Steelz, Seinabo Sey, Busy P, Waterson, Taya ft Yxng Bane, C Duncan, Joe Goddard, and more.

KDA’s UK DJ highlights include Brixton Academy, Printworks, Tobacco Dock, fabric, Sub Club, and Warehouse Project. Internationally, he’s played Ibiza clubs including DC10, Ushuaia and Amnesia, summer festivals like Creamfields, Secret Garden Party, and Lovebox, through to the odd party in the holy fashion week four - London, Paris, Milan and New York.

Currently in the studio hard at work on his debut album, KDA has promised a full mix of influences defiant of stereotypical genre, with a very interesting list of collaborators…

Monstrous mid-tempo Disco groovings on this one, giving the Avergae White Band a run for their money.... Doc Severinsen, the renowned Jazz hornsman dropping some tight ass Funk on this rare as hens teeth Epic white label promo. This is a fully legit reissue borne out of an Above Board / Sony music collaboration, repressed from the official sources. The original 1976 promo 12" had the same track on both sides as promos often did back then so we've decided to include a special version on the flip, a lovingly tweaked re-edit from the cult leader himself - DJ Harvey. Harv's edit has been around for a minute, but this version backing the OG 76 Disco mix makes this 12" a bonafide 'must grab' for all Disco enthusiasts! Do not snooze. This one's a winner!

Back in 90’s San Francisco; Scott, Gavin and Robbie Hardkiss helped pioneer the American Underground scene with their club nights, warehouse parties and groundbreaking record label. They forged a new direction for dance music with a string of vinyl releases by Hawke, God Within, Little Wing and Rabbit In The Moon, culminating in the seminal compilation Delusions Of Grandeur released in 1995. Delusions Of Grandeur made the Billboard Dance charts, went to #1 on the Rolling Stone Alternative Album chart and launched the international DJ/production careers of the Hardkiss brothers.

In 2018 to celebrate the 20th anniversary, the album was remastered and re-released with this new vinyl.

A year after the heartbreaking loss of “brother” Scott Hardkiss, Gavin and Robbie Hardkiss release 1991 which was described by Magnetic Magazine as “a throwback to that heady time as well as a timely loop into the future.” Reunited in the Bay Area in 2010, Gavin and Robbie produced an album that stands tall in the often repetitive world of electronic dance music. Named for the year the Hardkiss collective was formed, 1991 references the sounds and sentiments of their early rave days while exploring new funk and pseudo pop directions.

Another West-End sure-shot! This sublime piece of early electronic Boogie has always worn it's "classic" badge with a relaxed sense of pride since it's release in 1982, perhaps it's the languid synthed out groove supplied by studio maestros Nick martinelli & David Todd or Brenda Taylor's sublime vocals reminding us all that the game of love is always a 2 way street that are to blame?

Whatever it is, this is a solid, classic slice of Disco gold, more on the down to mid-tempo tip but still big enough to keep the dance-floors packed from the Garage to the Loft & beyond with ease! The production simply sounds years ahead of it's time (still does!) & it has the FUNK in bucket-loads, this is as essential as it gets, the real deal. Featured here are all the original mixes that were on the 1982 pressing (Yes! There's a dub mix!).

Re-mastered, re-pressed & re-released for 2015 with all original West End Records label artwork intact. Done in conjunction & with the permission of all right holders.

This year Kevin Saunderson, Ann Saunderson and Paris Grey, collectively known as the legendary band Inner City, release 'Future', their first entirely new material since parting company in 2001, written and produced in collaboration with another Detroit legend, namely Kenny Larkin.

The track marks a welcome return for a group that combined the tough, futuristic grooves of the Detroit scene with the vocal energy of R&B and gospel and helped to define the period in which house and techno moved from underground phenomena to top 10 material, paving the way for hundreds of dance hits to come.

‘Future’ is devastatingly catchy and highly emotional, exhibiting all the soulful flavours and qualities you would expect from these celebrated producers and singers. Masterfully re-edited by Carl Craig this track ascends to a higher place whilst Kenny Larkin is on remix duties, beautifully reworking the original into a techno infused monster with intoxicating staccato vocals.
