    3. C1. Luther Vandross - Get Myself Together (Louie Vega Remix)

Grammy award winner Louie Vega is known worldwide as one of the finest creators and purveyors of house music, both as an individual artist / producer / dj and as partner with Kenny Dope in the renowned production team known as Masters At Work. His multiple musical talents have also brought him much acclaim in the genres of salsa, afro-beat, jazz, hip-hop and soul. Last year he reached another career milestone when his album “Louie Vega Starring...XXVIII” was nominated at the 2017 Grammys for Best Dance Album, which further solidified his position as one of the industry’s premier artist / producers. But not everyone knows about Louie’s deep respect, admiration and knowledge of the disco genre that laid the foundation for so much music that moves crowd on dancefloors and festivals today.

Louie’s connection with Nervous Records and it’s father / son founders Sam and Michael Weiss goes back to the label’s very early years, as Masters At Work gave the label some of its earliest hits along with its signature release “The Nervous Track” by Nuyorican Soul. Louie was always aware of the many disco hits that had been released by Sam on his Sam Records label back in the 70’s and 80’s. But it was not until recently that Louie suggested Michael send him the 24 inch multi -track masters of seminal Sam Records disco classics like Gary’s Gang “Keep On Dancing,” John Davis & The Monster Orchestra “I Can’t Stop,” Convertion “Let’s Do It,” Vicky D “This Beat Is Mine,” as well as several others.

The multi-tracks are a treasure-trove, including musical contributions from some of disco era’s finest musicians and engineers. Going through the various percussion, horn and string tracks inspired Louie to create a series of remixes that became dancefloor anthems that topped the Traxsource and Beatport charts and reverberated on dancefloors worldwide. That response, and the common drive that Louie and Michael both share to constantly promote quality music that is both song and rhythm based, inspired them to take this endeavor a step further, and to create brand new songs. When Louie’s creative energies start flowing, his team knows to rise to the occasion. The result is NYC Disco, an album that represents the full range of disco – related genres including the following:

Western Australia's Red Ember Records is back from another archive diving adventure.
"Embers Only : Swan Songs" presents four previously-unreleased, deeply emotive cuts by Ewan Jansen written between 1999-2000.
The lead track 'Swan' marks the dance-floor tone in the collection with a hypnotic pseudo-electro groove sky lined by cathedral-like chords. Following on, 'Sea for yourself' reaches into deep minimal house territory with a powerfully gentle, piano topped, 4/4 approach. On the flipside, the earnest and leafy 'Love Machine' is drawn down the proverbial path, dropping broken beats and inhibitions along the way. The collection is signed off with the ambient chordal wash of 'Afterlude'... an introspective repeater equally on call for any early morning after party or your final few waking moments.

    3. B1. You Said
    4. B2. I Want You (Marquis Hawkes Remix)

After sharing his flair for producing polished house grooves on Kwench Records’ last EP, Philly veteran Pete Moss returns to collaborate with Cassy on the fifth release. This instalment gives two original tracks, and introduces AUS Music steamroller Marquis Hawkes into the fold as remixer.

Keeping to mind that Cassy’s motive was to produce with esteemed artists that she personally came to admire, to be enlisted on two EPs is a testament to Moss’s finesse. For Marquis Hawkes, Cassy’s admiration runs deep into his ability to expertly produce quality house music on many levels. Last year he had three critically exclaimed releases on Aus Music, with ‘The Basement Is Burning’ EP securing its place as a summer smash.

Hawkes blazes into ‘I Want You’ wielding sharp kicks and soaring pads, creating a mesmerising track that’s sure to elevate clubbers. On the B-side, Cassy and Moss’ ‘You Said’ breaks the silence and grabs us with the kind of spacey, distorted vocals that are sure to hypnotise listeners. Hawkes then leaves his mark by offering a euphoric slab of dance floor fodder that’s driven by a robust bassline for those peak time moments.

UK talent Josh Butler has made a rapid ascension since he burst onto the scene in 2013, winning coveted awards from Beatport and DJ Mag. He now brings his production prowess to Hot Creations, delivering a club ready two-parter for his debut EP on the label.

Title track Anonymous is made for low ceiling, sweaty basements with its deep, growling bass and select vocal cuts. Doesn’t Work swiftly follows suit, delivering another dose of rolling, after-hours goodness. A mainstay in the industry, having released on labels such as Cuttin Headz, Relief and Desolat, Andrea Oliva steps up for the remix of Anonymous with an acidic bassline and lively breakdown that diffuses into a carnival of synths.

Since emerging on the scene back in 2013 with his debut Got A Feeling on MTA Records, Josh Butler has firmly established himself as a musical force to be reckoned with. Releases followed on coveted labels such as Kaoz Theory, Rejected and Cajual. In 2016, Butler also launched his own highly regarded imprint, Origins.

    1. A1. JNZ
    2. B. Aura

Richy Ahmed’s agenda setting Four Thirty Two label welcomes back Jansons and the Senzala duo for two terrific tracks that are designed to detonate the dance floor.

London duo Senzala is made up of Jonni Santos and Sam Holland, a pair who have impressed with their inventive sounds and rich musical palettes on labels like Pets Recordings and forthcoming releases on No. 19. Fellow Londoner Jansons, meanwhile, has been tipped as one to watch, with numerous plays of his recent releases on Four Thirty Two, Knee Deep In Sound and VIVa across all the BBC radio specialist dance shows.

Both these artists released individually on Four Thirty Two in 2017 making a real impression, now they combine their considerable skills on this excellent two track single.

Opening up in brilliantly arresting fashion is ‘JNZ’, a big-hearted house track with bouncy rubber kicks and scattered percussion, bringing a loose sense of funk to the groove. Perfectly soulful, pitch shifted vocals (from Margaret Grace, for the spotters out there) bring an inescapable ‘hands in the air’ vibe that’s already tearing up some of the more discerning dancefloors out there, and already big with jocks like Jamie Jones, Richy Ahmed, Hot Since 82 and many more.

On the flip is ‘Aura’, with its razor sharp hi hats and exuberant drums molding an expertly functional track. Withering sci-fi synths shoot through the mix as frazzled chords bring more energy and atmospherics to this full fat house banger!
    Label head honcho, Richy Ahmed, explains more;

“A cracking new single then from Jansons & Senzala, new school house heroes to definitely watch out for over the coming year!
finally ready for release, the ‘JNZ’ track has been the biggest tracks in my record box over the last 5 months, it’s one of those
rare cuts that always gets an amazing reaction where ever it gets played, I’m really chuffed that this is coming out on Four Thirty Two”

    4. C2. On A Mission (FK Acapella)
    5. D1. On A Mission (Michael Mayer Remix)
    6. D2. On A Mission (FK Rockers Dub)

Crosstown Rebels celebrate their fifteenth year with their monumental 200th release. American DJ and producer Arthur Baker reunites with Rockers Revenge for the first time in thirty years. To complete the package, dance music heavyweights Francois K and Michael Mayer take on remix duties.

On A Mission is exactly that, “a mission of love, a mission of peace”. The positive vocals hark back to those of early 90s house tracks, which created unity through music and clubbing. The rhythmic beat of the drum is determined, as percussive layers build and the vocals bleed into the synths. Francois K provides two variations of the track. His remix features more prominent drumbeats driven by a growling bassline. On his rockers dub version, Francois goes all out and dubs us into the stratosphere. Up next is the Michael Mayer remix, with a more electronic take on the original with driving synths and a whirring, throbbing bass-line.

Created in 1982, Rockers Revenge was the brainchild of Arthur Baker and Donnie Calvin. Donnie provided lead vocals with Baker’s wife, Tina B, Dwight Hawkes and Adrienne Dupree Johnson on backing vocals. Their most prominent track, Walking On Sunshine, was a post-disco hit reaching #1 in the US dance charts and #4 in the UK charts.

Three years ago Baker and Hawkes reconnected through social media with Baker sending through his original Mission idea. Baker is known for his work with hip hop artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Planet Patrol, and New Order whilst also remixing the Pet Shop Boys’ 1986 hit In The Night. Fast forward to 2018 and the group performed a monumental live show at Get Lost Miami, and are currently in the studio working on new material. This Summer they will shoot a new documentary and perform live at various events.

Futureboogie’s 60th release comes from Elliott Lion, the uber talented musician and producer and the keyboardist and chief electronics whizz for the hugely successful band Editors.

Lion has recently embarked on a solo venture, embracing his love of classic house, techno and spaced out cosmic disco.

In its original form, ‘Ectsasy’ combines pacey disco looped beats, seductive vocals, dramatic sweeping pads and arpeggiated synths for a perfect cosmic pop experience.

Roman Flügel delivers a remix of epic proportions, stretching and dubbing out the original over the course of eight tantalising and telepathically charged minutes. A future Barbarellas classic in the making for sure!

Otherworldy atmospherics are at play in ‘I Can’t Forget You’, as Lion packs in a driving bassline and roaming synths into this techno infused burner! The darker vibes and dubwise sirens are intoxicating and perfectly demonstrates Lion’s production chops and a producer to look out for!

Cleveland is forever in search of the brown note. This is his second offering for the ESP Institute. Side A’s Tusk is a beautiful paradox—rhythm programs that churn like the inner workings of a grandfather clock, unmistakably mechanical, yet fashioned through muted analogue instrumentation that paints a deceptively organic picture. The crystallized jangle of FM synth voices toy with the softened drum patterns and vibrant animal-like chord gestures over nearly seven minutes of splendor. On side B, Aku digs further into mysticism, manifesting digital jungle themes, cleverly abstracted through erratic bleeps, distant tribal drums, atonal flutters and synthetic bird calls. The cinematic quality of Clevelands production shines through both tracks, but its Aku that sweeps us from reality to embark on a moonlit expedition in search long lost treasures, proving Cleveland a virtuoso skilled in building complex narratives with sound. These two songs will modulate your frequencies.

Future Disco, pioneers in bringing 21st century disco to the dancefloors, returns with its highly anticipated latest edition, A Disco Fantasy, on 27th April.

Inspired by the unparalleled flamboyant expressionism that the original Disco era captured so perfectly, A Disco Fantasy, takes listeners on a dazzling journey of House and Disco with exclusive cuts from club veter-ans Louie Vega and Greg Wilson, as well as exclusive edits from Future Disco themselves. The album also showcases some of the genre’s best new talent with Young Marco, Johannes Albert, Lovers and COEO all featuring across the uniquely crafted seventeen track mix.

A Disco Fantasy delivers the soundtrack that makes clubbers’ dreams a reality. Picture scenes of the al-most mythical Studio 54 where club-goers lost themselves in the music, the movement, the lights and the moment. Horses roamed, sexual expression was free and celebrities danced amongst a crowd that was dressed for the catwalk. Disco was always about fantasy and still is today. Future Disco’s - A Disco Fantasy captures this uninhibited spirit that was so electrifying and continues to be to this day.

Kraak & Smaak - Keep It Together, kicks off the album with an uplifting, pacey track that delivers a classic disco synth and bassline to match. Amp Fiddler - Steppin’ (Future Disco Piano Edit) ramps up the mix with a classic 90’s piano, along with the euphoric Sylvester - Dance (Disco Heat) (Louie Vega Re-touch Edit) and pumping Delphi - Blue Tuesday. Get lost in the moment with Ten Ven - Turn It Up and experience those sun rise spine tingles with Pale Blue - You Stopped Dying.

As a globally recognised bastion of quality with over twenty successful albums, Ibiza residencies and in ex-cess of 5 million digital streams, Future Disco continues to expertly curate fresh House and Disco that’s relevant for today’s music lovers. And with Disco and Soulful House now experiencing a somewhat main-stream renaissance, club-goers are demanding a more glamourous and flamboyant experience to the dark warehouse raves of late.

Sean Brosnan, compiler and Future Disco DJ, explains, “Future Disco has always been at the forefront of the modern Disco scene and we like to think we’ve played a significant role in the genre’s revival over the past 10 years. The trend has shifted from a darker, more lonesome dance floor experience to a more cele-bratory vibe with the theatre returning to our dancefloors. We wanted to encapsulate this in our latest cura-tion and fire up that musical fantasy clubbers are craving again.”

Title track 'Techno Is Dead' lands on his own Fine Human imprint and takes a play from people sentencing the end of a style, but the truth is the floors are having it like no tomorrow. Sonic wise, it’s a 8 minute slice of driving, shadowy, electronic sound, with rumbling 4/4 beats and warehouse ready builds working in tandem for a truly standout piece of finely balanced sound, that will no doubt light up the clubs.

Following up is ' Go Down To Mexico', with an array of off kilter stabs and trippy vocal elements solidifying Dino's dexterous production style. Expect to hear these across the clubs in the coming months.

The two electronic artists have been independently successful in their respective careers, but as Pitchfork expressed in their glowing review “Their collective output doesn’t sound much like either’s work; it doesn’t even necessarily reflect the thin, convex sliver where their interests overlap. Instead, they’ve hit upon something new.”

This new sound also proved to be a hit with the likes of Mojo, Phonica, XLR8R, Self Titled and DJ Mag all including it their annual best of lists.

The artists have now handpicked four artists to create their own vision of the Talaboman sound.

Superpitcher, Samo DJ and Luke Slater under his L.B. Dub Corp alias have all seriously delivered the goods.

    1. A Brazilian Rhyme (Danny Krivit Edit)
    2. B Runnin' (Danny Krivit Edit)

The word 'classic' gets thrown around a lot these days, often abused and attached to things that don't deserve the tag.

I think we can all agree that an outfit like Earth, Wind & Fire are truly deserving of such an accolade, since their first tentative steps in the early 1970's as an outfit the Chicago, IL pioneers have made themselves a force to be reckoned with and have sold over 90,000,000 units worldwide! Fusing together Jazz, Funk, Soul, African and Brazilian sounds EWF have been at the top of their game for decades, seeing them inducted into the legendary 'rock n roll hall of fame' at the turn of the millennium. Respect due. On this special, legit 12" reissue we are treated to 2 stellar reworkings by one of Disco and modern dance music's most respected names - Danny Krivit. Danny's tenure in dance music has almost been as long as EWF's themselves so it makes sense that he's on deck to breathe some dancefloor magic into their cult classics 'Brazilian Rhyme' and 'Runnin'. Both tracks are massive club anthems with them being generously sampled over the years and featuring in the playlists of too numerous to mention DJ's and selectors. Both of these amazing edits are extremely sought after and have been legally reissued by Above Board Distribution in conjunction with Danny Krivit and the legal rights holders - Sony Music Entertainment. This high quality repress features original Columbia white label Disco promo artwork and has been remastered from Sony's original sources by Optimum Mastering, Bristol UK.

Pharaohs is a live band from Los Angeles including blossoming producers Suzanne Kraft, Ale Cohen (from the legendary Dublab) and surfer/synth-geek, Sam Cooper. One might assume these lot are in search of their sound, dabbling in various sub-genres, loosely citing a mixed bag of references… but any listener with a refined palette will acknowledge these three as Renaissance Men of the highest order. They simply know what sounds nice and strive to execute their vision with taste, regardless of what inspiration fuels them at any given moment. Side A leads with "Ahumbo" (named after Sam's dream beach in Zanzibar), blending a dry and simplistic rhythm section with swelling synth chords, a cheeky vocal and a vibrant surf guitar. Following "Ahumbo" is the title track "Island Time," a bouncy jungle vibe with chant about tropical fruits, a reminder that its always Summer somewhere! Last, but not least, Side B doles out "If It Ever Feels Right," a percussive House jam that is literally a JAM… Its on this track, with its live percussion, saxophone and drum programming, that the band capacaity of Pharoahs shines.

Young Marco stepped into the ESP Institute one day in 2012 with a handful of undeniably brilliant music, and has ever since maintained an integral role in the mission of the label. His unaffected instinct and sincere writing process are perfectly balanced by his meticulous craft—a rare quality among contemporary artists which promises a vast and fruitful oeuvre. This is universal music, transcending genre and taste level despite being wholly instrumental. Much like his ability as a DJ, pairing esoteric records to discerning dance floors worldwide, Marco's talent for producing the right voice in an emotive melody and dynamic arrangement is aspirational. Biology is a passionate album that will outlive the many fleeting wrinkles in electronic music, but will more importantly nest in your heart.

    1. A Jackie Moore - This Time Baby
    2. B Jackie Moore - Let's Go Somewhere and Make Love

Jackie Moore's 1979 Disco bomb 'This time baby' is one of the biggest tracks of the genre. A total classic that found fame on the dancefloors via DJ's like David Mancuso, Larry Levan and Ron Hardy it is the epitome of a roof-raiser. Produced by Philly legend Bobby Eli (MFSB, Salsoul Orchestra, Stylistics, Barbara Mason) and mixed by underground Disco legend John Luongo this is an essential 12". Originally performed by The O-Jays Jackie's version ramps the energy right up to the max and cranks the heat up to 100. Everything is here, killer driving drums and percussion, THAT bassline that drops, the cowbells, horns, strings and of course...... Jackie! This is a straight repress of the '79 pressing on Columbia and features the sweet b-side 'Let's go somewhere and make love', another breezy Philly number courtesy of Mr. Eli yet again. All round quality. This classic has been legally reissued by Above Board distribution in conjunction with the legal rights holders - Sony Music Entertainment. This high quality repress features original Columbia pink label Disco 12" artwork and has been remastered from Sony's original sources by Optimum Mastering, Bristol UK.

    1. A. Temples
    2. B. Hyper Seconds

2017 saw the first two stunning instalments of Lone AKA Matt Cutler’s Ambivert Tools series - breezy atmospheric house, stacked with ‘floor ready trax, inspired by his red hot Magic Wire imprint. It also saw him present an inspired instalment for the venerable DJ Kicks series. (Mixmag number 2 compilation 2017)

Now freshening up for 2018, Volume 3 finds Lone in vintage form - ‘Temples’ reconciles his love of heavy breakbeats with the nagging euphoric melodies, tracer thin synth lines and angular bass for which he is so beloved. ‘Hyper Seconds’ once again displays Cutler’s ability to channel the grooves of classic US house with a banging rhythm track and glistening gated arpeggios contrast perfectly for a rugged peak time bliss out.

With this latest instalment of ‘Ambivert Tools' it’s fair to say that Cutler has proved himself one of the most consistent delivers of quality dancefloor tackle that perfectly balances the need for radiant melody / harmony with tough grooves and psychedelic experimentation.
