March sees studio wizard & cult UK live artist The Emperor Machine serve up his latest thrilling full length, Music Not Safari.

Andy Meecham is a long-time stalwart who remains unconventional and inventive in all he does. He hasvbeen dazzling dancefloors for years as The Emperor Machine with his synth-heavy, tough edged andvpsyched-out disco beats on DFA, Phantasy and Skint Records, and has a musical history dating back to thevUK’s acid house explosion as part of Bizarre Inc. and latterly Chicken Lips. His grooves are tough and designed for dancing but are always full of space-age cinematic details that make them stand out from the crowd. That is also true when serving up one of his unique live shows; few conjure the sort of soundscapes as The Emperor Machine, and for that reason, he has been a hit at Craig Richards’ Houghton festival and is the only live artist to have been invited back twice to the bi-annual ‘Revolting‘ party Berghain’s infamous Lab.oratory. In the studio, he has collaborated to critical acclaim with the likes of Erol Alkan as Future Four, and picked up high profile support along the way from DJ’s including Andrew Weatherall, The Black Madonna, Francois K and Laurent Garnier, to name just a few. Across his latest full length, he once again runs a gamut of styles with a true sense of studio flair few can match, making ‘Music Not Safari’ a truly unique listening experience.

Opener 'C.C.' is a colourful synth opus, with skyward chords and disco beats all getting you up on your toes. The shimmering synths continue on 'What You Need', which has hip swinging claps and perfectly squelchy boogie bass that goes back to the future. Recent single, 'House Des Lowe' is full of trickery, reverb, and peerless sound designs, with its rubbery bass and elastic grooves all lit up by darting chords and dancing percussive patterns.

The Emperor Machine's tracks are never less than luxurious and ebullient and that's the case again on 'Moscow Not Safari,' a cosmic adventure filled with lithe synth work and sonic definition of the highest order. After more rumbling drums and rugged bass that are designed to ignite disco lovers from all eras on 'Stiff Poly' comes the latest single. 'Danse Blanc' is an electrifying track that speeds up as it unfolds, with a knotted baseline and organic, wooden percussion all tumbling freely beneath celestial synths and keys. Like all recent singles, when this one gets its standalone release it will be in three forms;‘Extended’, ‘Version 54’ and ‘Warehouse mix’. Former singles 'Function' and 'Two Voice' then keep the good times alive with the prickly and upbeat disco charm of 'You Two' sandwiched in between.

This is another timeless offering from one of dance music's most consistently excellent names and comes ahead of live performances at Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg, Good Room in N.Y. and two slots at the UK’s best-loved Somerset festival ;)

    1. A1. Deetron Remix
    2. A2. Benedikt Frey Remix
    3. B1. Fort Romeau Remix
    4. B2. Original Version

Mesmerising, ghostly, seductive, urgent, poignant, “Decider” is about the ultimate endgame: death. This track draws you into its web and holds you there. There’s no escape. Is there anything after ‘the end?’ If there is, will it bring happiness, or just more pain? And, are we to be judged by The Decider when we get there?

The inspiration, if you can call it that, for the song comes from the band’s own recent experiences. “We’ve lost a few people recently that we were close to. It does tend to make you ponder the universe, and whether you get a second act,” says Butch Dante, guitarist.

Filmed on location in the Texas panhandle, the video will be the second of a triptych of films written by Butch, focused on the band’s main preoccupation: the fact that the world is ending and people should be kinder to each other while it does.

Now they’ve been remixed. By these people:

    Deetron
This Swiss maestro has one of the most characterful sounds in modern day techno. Taking a big inspiration from the big expansive, moody sounds of Detroit, Sam Geiser also borrows percussive influence from Chicago House whilst instilling his very own atmospheric personality, making for one hell of a ride.

    Benedikt Frey
For our money, one of the most exciting exponents of leftfield house and disco there is. His music is always pushing boundaries, with a unique experimental spirit that has indie and punk deep in its heart.

    Fort Romeau
Everything from widescreen, deep house, and warm, bubbly acid right through to raw, driving Italo and ethereal disco house; the Cin Cin boss is one of the most exciting and elegant exponents of today’s underground electronic scene.

Representing Brownsville & Bed Stuy Brooklyn, rap duo Smif-N-Wessun, Tek and Steele, first appeared on Black Moon’s debut album Enta Da Stage in 1993. Adding relentless rhymes to tracks "U da Man" and "Black Smif N' Wessun," the pair paved the way for the Brooklyn Supergroup Boot Camp Clik.

The EP is framed around the concept of juxtaposing moments of euphoria and melancholy found within club music, delicately expressing intricate textures and emotion for the quiet corners whilst maintaining a dance-floor sensibility.

“Ultimately, I wanted to build a body of work that explores and extends upon various corners of the Harcore Continuum. Through the juxtaposition of fleeting moments of euphoria scattered amongst twisted, melancholic soundscapes, I aimed to express fluctuating emotions which denote the spirit and energy of the club/UK sound-system culture”. unperson

    12. B6. Ready For Me

On their second album Made Me Feel, Fabrikate take a trip back to the glory days of disco, a time when love was the answer, inclusion was the only message worth spreading and everyone was invited.

Fabrikate are Francis and Chuck — two guys with similar tastes and interests digging into the past to uncover some long lost musical wisdom. Their devotion to this quest grants them laser focus, working like madmen to create bumping, neon-flecked sonic landscapes for their listeners to wander through.

Both Francis and Chuck have their own personal tie to the disco era and the forgotten magic it left with. They grew up listening to celestial funk throughout their childhoods in Montreal, an island with deep disco roots of its own. The music they produce as Fabrikate takes the spirit of disco and weave it into a modern sound, with breathtaking results.

“We both grew up immersed in disco in our own ways. The music and the culture of that era has always been a deep influence. Disco culture was very inclusive and non-judgemental. It was always about the vibes and the experience. With Fabrikate we’re creating our own interpretation of what disco music means for us today.” Fabrikate

Across 14 unique tracks, Made Me Feel blends both house music and disco influences into a sound that while heavily influenced by the sounds of the past, also manages to remain rooted in modern-day dancefloors, and takes inspiration from the US, Europe and of course their native Canada.

“Montreal was a major player in the disco scene even back in its early days, had an important effect on a whole generation. We feel that Montreal has incredible artistic diversity, and that has a lot to do with the emergence of disco and how the city played a role in it.” Fabrikate

From the very start of album opener It’s Coming Down, the tone is set: a triumphant brass refrain that drops into a fast-paced 4/4 beat and glorious vocals. From there the album kicks on in magnificent fashion with the life-affirming filtered loops of Feed The Flame and basement stomp of Into The Ground, one of the album’s most overtly house records.

Another clear album highlight is lead single Love Was Real, a joyous disco-house hybrid with a triumphant vocal, punchy drums and a brass hook that will bring a smile to even the most hardened of dancefloor veterans.

Fabrikate have an innate ability to pick out a wonderful sample and transform it into something almost overwhelmingly powerful: the aforementioned Love Was Real and the equally infectious New York City Man being prime examples of this. Years of obsessing over obscure disco records have given both Francis and Chuck a wealth of geeky knowledge on which to draw, and this album is a masterclass in how to do sampling properly.

A joyous homage to an era of which happiness and hedonism was the main focus of the music, Made Me Feel is a phenomenal accomplishment, and one that will bring joy to disco revivalists and newcomers alike.

    1. A Mountains (Extended Mix)
    2. B Mountains (Danny Krivit Remix)

Few artists strike the balance between the classic and contemporary quite as effortlessly as The Vision. Striving to produce meaningful and honest records, their latest single ‘Mountains’ makes an apt follow-up to their incredible breakout hit ‘Heaven’, the vocal house record that garnered support from BBC 6 Music and Radio 1, as well as tastemakers that ranged from Joe Claussell and Gerd Janson to Gilles Peterson. Teaming up with the exquisite Andreya Triana once more, ‘Mountains’ illustrates the duo’s ability to create records with boundless dancefloor appeal, without forgoing a drop of soul or emotion, as melodic keys and rich instrumentation bring Andreya’s stirring vocal to life. After his acclaimed edit of ‘Heaven’ it seems only appropriate that dance music pioneer Danny Krivit would provide a remix of the pair’s latest offering too, road tested at high-profile gigs like Dekmantel festival, his club-friendly mix with extended breaks and a deep, wandering bassline highlights his signature New York City flare.

With recent releases on Madhouse, Toy Tonics, Neovinyl and Traxx Underground, as well as remixes for the likes of Waajeed (scheduled), Tender Games and Joey Negro, Black Loops continues to be in high demand and has resulted in a packed DJ schedule taking him from South Africa to Australia, from the US to Asia as well as playing regularly in Europe and his home city of Berlin.

For his Something Special release Black Loops has treated us to three original tracks (with a fourth added for the digital package) which will please his regular followers whilst showing us a development to his sound. His trademark shuffling beats, warm bouncing basslines and analogue pads are all present and correct. Tracks that feel deceptively simple and minimal enough to sound lovely on big sound systems, but which also offer enough depth and musicality to touch the soul and connect with on a deeper level. But… we can also hear some fresh sound design coming into play, punchy FM synths cutting through the mix, some more delicate melodies and rolling arrangements which unfold gently and draw you into their warm confines.

Launching 2020 with a split EP that continues the labels thematic approach with all tracks based around the concept of biophilia. Whilst packing the kind of dance floor punch that only the heart of nature can supply.

On the A side Fibre Optixxx kicks off our (re)connection with esoteric environs with a patient dose of intelligent electronics in “Hive Activity”. A mid tempo Drum and Bass piece that is versatile, raw, and straight to the point.

Next up, “Hibiscus” presents a more dubbed, subtle sound that is just as addictively danceable. In essence a post-modern reconstruction of Kotton the Cutie - think Baltimore club muzik but in planetary orbit.

The B side comes from Melbourne resident DJ Life. His first “Lightning Ridge” is delivered with bags of attitude and is truly club certified as it twists into almost progressive territory, with it's quasi hypnotic nu-era electronics. Finishing off the EP “Butterfly” is classy, patient and beautiful with flashes of early Detroit.

Another killer from Potatoheadz, a label carving it's name into the global scene. Musically deep and utterly fresh. A statement of intent for what's to come from them in 2020.

Boston's Dana Kelley aka Callisto is a man whose music has long been the subject of much deserved adulation. A student of the deep and soulful, an explorer of the melodic and galactic, and an artist who manages to capture imaginations with his supremely crafted sonics. He is a much missed artist, someone who departed the physical too early, but the body of work he left behind has spoken to generations of listeners, DJ's and fans in equal measure.

This, the first of 3 compilations based around his golden period of productions for the legendary Chicago label Guidance Recordings, sees some of Dana's most highly coveted work featured side by side, all together in one place. A celebration of the man's music, his vision and the forward looking nature of his music that is still intact today. It's hard to think of someone with a more unique style and with a truer idea of their own sound-world. Callisto takes us deep inside, into other worlds with his own individualistic take on house, techno, ambient and even jungle and D&B.

These compilations celebrate one of the most idiosyncratic artists from the second wave of US house music producers, a truly essential body of work presented here respectfully, sourced from all audio sources courtesy of Above Board Projects, Guidance Recordings and Dana's family. Mastered by Curved, London and with special artwork by Atelier Superplus featuring a never before seen image of Dana from his family's photo albums.

    1. A Who Got Da Props? (Evil Dee's Deadly Mix)
    2. B Who Got Da Props? (Evil Dee's Deadly Instrumental)

The first in a series of all-time CLASSIC hip-hop anthems from the Nervous vaults, pressed onto high quality dinked 45's.

Remastered from the original source material and featuring the unedited 'dirty' version on the A-side, and the full instrumental on the B-side, these 45's are for the heads who know what time it really is!

Black Moon's 'Who Got The Props' needs no introduction, it's place in hip-hop history is fully solidified. The combination of vintage Beatminerz SP1200 beats paired with the legendary MC's Buckshot and the 5 Ft. Accelerator's streetwise NYC raps is a heady mixture indeed. Often speaking of street life in New York in the 1990's, Black Moon gained cult status via their 1993 debut LP 'Enta Da Stage', one of the most celebrated hip-hop debut albums of all time. The Beatminerz production changed the game, their deep knowledge and understanding of samples, records and digging in the crates gave their sound a real style and edge. 'Who Got Da Props' is the perfect example of this, one of those timeless rap records that appeals to the hardcore and can ignite the party. Truly essential. Every home should have one (or 2!).

Fully legit, licensed and reissued by Above Board distribution in conjunction with Nervous Records, NYC. 2018.

The word 'classic' gets thrown around a lot these days, often abused and attached to things that don't deserve the tag.

I think we can all agree that an outfit like Earth, Wind & Fire are truly deserving of such an accolade, since their first tentative steps in the early 1970's as an outfit the Chicago, IL pioneers have made themselves a force to be reckoned with and have sold over 90,000,000 units worldwide! Fusing together Jazz, Funk, Soul, African and Brazilian sounds EWF have been at the top of their game for decades, seeing them inducted into the legendary 'rock n roll hall of fame' at the turn of the millennium. Respect due. On this special, legit 12" reissue we are treated to 2 stellar reworkings by one of Disco and modern dance music's most respected names - Danny Krivit. Danny's tenure in dance music has almost been as long as EWF's themselves so it makes sense that he's on deck to breathe some dancefloor magic into their cult classics 'Brazilian Rhyme' and 'Runnin'. Both tracks are massive club anthems with them being generously sampled over the years and featuring in the playlists of too numerous to mention DJ's and selectors. Both of these amazing edits are extremely sought after and have been legally reissued by Above Board Distribution in conjunction with Danny Krivit and the legal rights holders - Sony Music Entertainment. This high quality repress features original Columbia white label Disco promo artwork and has been remastered from Sony's original sources by Optimum Mastering, Bristol UK.

    * Ltd Ed. of 1500
    * Vinyl and digital release date: 31/05/2019

Released by Lonely Table, Anja Ngozi and The Vinyl Factory, with support from the Arts Council England, the album spans genres and eras, touching on jazz, experimental electronic, post-punk, dub and ambient influences, painting a diverse picture of the UK’s expanding underground sound.

Drawing on Barbican’s major Basquiat retrospective in 2017, the project also explores themes around identity, representation and social inequality.

As such Untitled also encompasses a youth project with Ruff Sqwad Foundation, in which seven BME young people aged 12-18 were given the opportunity to visit the Tate Modern and create music in response to what they saw.

As LayFullstop says: “We’re celebrating a legend who fought with his brushes and spoke with his work. The need for his work is still as current as ever. The issues we’re attacking are still as current as ever. So it’s only logical that Basquiat is and will continue to be as current as ever.”

On the night of 15th June 2018, three friends, Dave Okumu, Tom Herbert and Tom Skinner came together to perform a selection of deconstructed compositions in an improvisatory format at The Crypt in Camberwell, south-east London. Their shared history as musicians stretches back to their formative teenage years when they would congregate to learn how to play the music which had impacted so heavily on their lives, resulting in a distillation of funk, soul, pop, metal, classical, punk, hip hop, dance, folk, electronic and world music, filtered through the prism of the endlessly resourceful, inventive and expressive language of jazz.

Their individual and collective journeys have woven them into the fabric of contemporary music through their work with artists as diverse as Adele, Grace Jones, Anna Calvi, Amy Winehouse, Sons Of Kemet, Kano, Lianne La Havas, Zero 7, Ed O’Brien, Jack De Johnette, Jessie Ware, Yoko Ono and Polar Bear. Their personal visions have come to fruition via their own projects, namely Okumu and Herbert’s Mercury-nominated The Invisible and Skinner’s solo outing as Hello Skinny.

Somehow, that informal night in Camberwell would represent the closing of a circle and the beginning of a new chapter for these three musicians.

    • John Talabot and Axel Boman collaborate on an eight track release as Talaboman
    • Gatefold 12” double vinyl and digital
    • For fans of John Talabot, Axel Boman, DJ Koze, Leon Vynehall

It’s been over two years since Talaboman’s ‘Sideral’ EP, a joint release out on Hivern Discs and Studio Barnhus. It was John Talabot and Axel Boman’s collaborative debut and marked a new sound for the pair, consisting of rich synth motifs and vivid, afro-infused drum programming.

The two electronic artists have been independently successful in their respective careers, responsible  for some of the most well-received dance releases in recent years (including Talabot’s ‘fin’ LP and Boman’s ‘Family Vacation’ LP) . Featuring on labels such as Permanent Vacation, Young Turks and !K7, Barcelona-based Talabot has become known for his unique take on chugging house and electronica. Similarly, Boman’s refined his own dusky aesthetic via Pampa, Hypercolour and his own Studio Barnhus imprint.

Now, the pair come back together with an album’s worth of material in a release titled ‘The Night Land’. Due for release on [date], via R&S records, ‘The Night Land’ continues Talaboman’s head-first dive into the deeper reaches of their conjoined musical creativity.

Nothing’s really changed since their first release, apart from the fact that this time round they produced (in their own words) an “absurd amount of music”. Writing sessions spread out across studios in Barcelona, Stockholm, and Gothenburg have given space to nascent ideas, where the two have been able to mature their sound.

The music is patient and warm, but also broad and diverse. ‘Midnattssol’ opens with atmospheric tropical panoramas, coloured by rhythmic stick hits and bell chimes. ‘Safe Changes’ and ‘Brutal Chugga-Chugga’ are hazy slow burners that crawl at a nonchalant pace, while tracks like ‘Samsa’ and ‘The Ghosts Hood’ are contrastingly more immediate and assertive.

‘The Night Land’, as the title suggests, “is a journey inwards, an attempt to reach our subconscious and to document our dreams. We want to ignite hope and push imagination. Close your eyes and open your mind.” Even when many tracks involve the heavy use of synthesisers and distortion, Talaboman have been sure to keep things sounding organic and light.

There is no complicated message or hidden concept behind this release, it’s simply “two persons meeting and playing music, a catalan and a swede talking blip blop until we felt that we had something worth saying” - and perhaps unsurprisingly this impromptu style of working has resulted in an album that is rich and vivid, but also feels somehow pure and sincere.

The message is clear: “Love is all this world needs. Loosen up those tight fists and give your sisters and brothers a helping hand and dance your anger away.”

    1. A Windy City Theme
    2. B Show Me The Way To Love

The true definition of a "rare-groove", "Windy City Theme" is a triumphant, funky paean to the spiritual home of the Blues, Jazz and House music. Often closely guarded by the rare record cognoscenti this scarce 45 on the Chi Sounds label was originally released in 1976 and became a solid staple of London's underground rare-groove scene, finding favour with DJ's like Norman Jay and Giles Peterson with the track even appearing on their groundbreaking "Journeys By DJ" mix. B-side cut "Show Me The Way" is not to be overlooked either, a smooth, stepping soul number with lush orchestration and yearning vocals featuring the amazing arrangements of The Chi-Sound Orchestra, sounding like a beautiful cross between MFSB and Marvin Gaye. An utterly essential 45 for any serious Soul or Funk fan, legitimately repressed and remastered with love on dinked 45 for 2016.

They’re young and tough – and especially wonderful too – easily one of the most compelling harmony soul groups to ever hail from the Windy City! The set’s a Chicago soul gem from the early 70s – recorded with a laidback, slightly tripped-out vibe that’s different than the tighter styles of other groups from the same scene – definitely righteous at points, with some of the superbad modes you might hear from an east coast lineup like The Delfonics or Soul Generation, especially when they were trying to get a bit more conscious in their message. Arrangements are great – handled by Tom Tom Washington, Eugene Record, and Cliff Davis – very much at the best Brunswick mode, but again with a deeper sort of vibe too. The title cut’s a monster, and a very fitting follow-up to their earlier “Sly, Slick, & Wicked” track – and the album features 2 versions (vocal and instrumental) of a cut called “This Is The Lost Generation”, a very righteous soul groove with a heavy production tip.

Re mastered and re released for 2015 in conjunction with Brunswick. Too legit to quit.

    3. B1 Where Are We Going? Pt 2

Ahead of the release of a full length album by the same title, Honey Soundsystem records presents 3 breakout tracks on 12" vinyl from Octo Octa's "Where Are We Going?". Side A features the "new school" breaks pumper "Move On (Let Go) (De-Stress Mix) and the peak-time synth heavy tear jerker "On Your Lips." On the flip we share the 9 and a half minute aquatic house opus "Where Are We Going? Pt. 2"

“Do you feel better?” — is the line Maya Bouldry-Morrison aka Octo Octa repeats like a mantra on the final track of “Where Are We Going?” her newest and second studio LP. “It was the question every single person asked me after coming out as transgender,” she told us “Overall I do, but no, I don’t feel better at every moment, which is why the track slips out with a dour bass drone in addition to a beautiful pad. These days, both emotions are ever-present for me.” It is precisely this candor and intensity that immediately drew us in when Maya sent over the LP to consider for the Honey Soundsystem label. As DJs we are always looking for music that can speak in our sets, not just the highest caliber productions, but songs that represent the changing landscape of the queer dance-floor. “Where Are We Going?” reads like a diary. With track titles like “No More Pain (Promises To A Younger Self)” and “Move On (Let Go) (De-stress Mix)” you can’t avoid the autobiographical messages of these songs, but Maya leaves no booty un-shaken - this is still 9 four-to-the-floor house and techno beauties to rock your body. Her willingness to even model for the cover art of this LP, proved this is a side to Octo Octa we've never seen or heard before, an artist ready to let her fans experience an intimacy as deep as the synths and lead lines she has gained notoriety for. Applying her years of international DJ’ing, this album flows with intention and has effortlessly found its way back into our headphones and home stereo systems repeatedly - Pro-tip: you can even have sex to it. Needless to say this is the first time in a decade Honey Soundsystem has thrown itself at a contemporary LP and we know once you hear it, you will know where we are going…
