Berlin based co-founder of Visionquest Shaun Reeves has gradually carved out his unique take of raw, minimalistic house music over the years via releases on Dorian Paic’s Raum...musik, One Records, his new Shantu label alongside Tuccillo and of course his own Visionquest. Here we see him pairing up with Canadian duo Maher Daniel and Amir Javasoul who together as Creatures Of Habit have been picking up attention from the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Zip, Raresh and Apollonia amongst others.

Here marking the debut of their collaborative ‘Creatures Of Shaun’ guise the duo offer up their ‘Mind Over Matters’ EP, the title-track leads and lays down mind bending, modulating percussion and synth swirls alongside bumpy bass grooves and hypnotic atmospherics whilst stirring in a tripped-out spoken word vocal sample to further fuel the psychedelic house feel.

‘Blink’ follows and tips the focus over to resonant subs, stripped-back organic percussion and murky vocal swells, again resulting in something mesmerizing and groove-led before ‘Out Of Orbit’ reduces things even further to refined shuffled hats, minute rhythmic modulations and snaking bass flutters.

The Palm Tree needs no introduction to anyone who has visited this part of town. Diamond boozer and Blitz survivor, it stands solitary on the Regent’s Canal between Mile End and the Roman Road, quietly resisting the urge to move with the times. On weekend evenings you can enjoy the jazz standards of the Great American Songbook played by the musicians who feature on the album, no ticket required.

    1. A. Loco Dice - $lammer
    2. B. Loco Dice - $lammer (DJ T-1000 Remix)

Desolat’s Loco Dice joins the roster of Martinez Brothers Cuttin’ Headz label this April with
‘$lammer’, backed with a remix from Detroit Techno veteran DJ T-1000.
Düsseldorf’s Loco Dice has long been one of the most respected figures in contemporary electronic music with releases over the years on leading labels like Cocoon, Cadenza, Ovum and of course his own Desolat as well as a heavy touring schedule taking him across the globe year in year out. Here though we see Dice offering up his new single courtesy of Cuttin’ Headz, a platform the Martinez Brothers and associates to deliver high octane, dance floor focused House and Techno.

The original mix of title track ‘$lammer’ leads with spiralling brass like bass tones, flute licks, shuffled shakers and resonant synth hooks running alongside a bumpy bass line and an amalgamation of heady, processed vocal lines.

Following is Detroit’s DJ T-1000 stepping up on remix duties, stripping back the aesthetic of the original to lay focus on robust rhythms and various vocal refrains from the original whilst chugging bass and tension building atmospherics gradually unfold throughout.

Loco Dice’s ‘$lammer’ is out on Cuttin’ Headz 21st (Vinyl) and 27th (Digital) April 2018.

    1. A1. Future Four 'Connection'
    2. B1. Future Four - Connection (I-Cube Rework)'

Initially paying tribute to the analogue absurdity, sonic diversity and sheer imagination of the early 90s dance music landscape, Future Four returns after a hiatus of several years, pushing into new eras, machines and ideals with 'Connection'. Initially a solo project of Andy Meecham, the brains behind Emperor Machine, Chicken Lips, and Bizarre Inc., 'Connection' is the first Future Four release to feature the contribution of Erol Alkan as a permanent member, and is a coupled with a remix from I:Cube.

A veritable powerhouse of synths, vintage drum machines and all man-ner of effects, 'Connection' unfolds with minimal tempo and maximum impact, as sequences of unexpected electronics gradually build from every direction, each landing with the razor sharp precision associated with their composers. Cascading synths overflow like fizzy drinks, pro-pelling the track along an electronic patchwork of FM synthesis and psy-chedelia.

On the remix, I:Cube takes the unpredictable rhythm of 'Connection' and coaxes it’s versatile, multiple elements into a timeless slice of boogie house. Nurturing the outsider Casio feel of the track under a musical heat-lamp, the always forward-thinking Frenchman emerges with a cut that could easily soundtrack both sun deck and space station.

Originally released in 1979 on the Chimneyville label, an obscure soul imprint operating as part of the Miami Malaco label family tree.

This one has it all - lush strings and orchestration, tight as rhythm section, amazing songwriting and everything else in-between.

Amazing that this group only cut one LP and a handful of singles. The talent on display here is truly of another level and one wonders how such an album came to be.

Either way, this is an amazing set of rarest of rare grooves and the LP has been a heavily coveted item by the rare record cognoscenti in the past. This is a 100% legit repress, made in conjunction with the rights holders and remastered to the highest possible standard, a truly essential record for fans of quality underground soul & funk. 1. A1. Marry Me
    2. B1. Dictionary (Remix)

Highlife throws a curveball for it’s next release with a piece of Kwaito from South Africa’s DJ Call Me.

A track sweeter than Irn Bru, we first stumbled across ‘Marry Me’ on the radio by the New York DJ, Sadaf. After a quick search, we found it on YouTube with over a million views, only to discover it had been “track of the summer(s)” back in South Africa at the start of the decade. Almost a ‘Searching for Sugarman’ moment... The track wasn’t available to buy in any kind of format, and so began an elaborate quest to track down the artist via his defunct Facebook page. After many an unanswered email and a couple of years persistence, we finally managed to track down a manager still in touch with DJ Call Me, and we’re now involved in some regular Whatsapp exchanges with the man himself.

After showing it to a select group of DJ pals, it began to show up on the ID of music Facebook group, courtesy of plays by the likes of Axel Boman, Hunee & Kornél Kovács. Last summer, Auntie Flo and Andrew played at a wedding in Beirut and this track got such a massive reaction that we’ve been dying to share it with you ever since. DJ Call Me’s ‘Marry Me’ is out via Highlife on Fri, 20th April 2018.

    1. A So You Wanna Be A Star
    2. B So You Wanna Be A Star (Danny Krivit Edit)

'So you wanna be a star' - 24 carat Disco gold from 1980 right here. Mtume, led by legendary Jazz percussionist and all-round musical visionary James Mtume had a number of massive hits and can count quite a few 'classics' within their repertoire ('Juicy Fruit' anyone?). This flawlessly arranged, funk drenched jam speaks on the dangers of living life too fast and relying on those who can't be trusted. Remember, this was the beginning of the 1980's, the Disco era had began to fade amidst the drug hazed excesses of the previous decade, while the music continued forging it's path skyward with tremendous records like this one. 'So you wanna...' really has a message and that's not surprising considering it has one of the most underrated production teams behind it in the shape of Mtume / Lucas. A true gem of the post-Disco era. Essential and rare.

This repress of the original Epic promo from 1980 is backed with a brand new re-edit from one of NYC's Disco kings - Mr.K aka Danny Krivit. With almost half a century spent behind the turntables in NYC and beyond he surely understands records like 'So you wanna be a star' intrinsically, he was, after all, there when it all happened! This classic has been legally reissued by Above Board distribution in conjunction with the legal rights holders - Sony Music Entertainment. This high quality repress features original Epic label Disco 12" artwork and has been remastered from Sony's original sources by Optimum Mastering, Bristol UK.

Back in August 2017, Jerome Derradji received a call by one of Chicago’s most renowned record dealer.
It went like this: “Hey Jerome, I’ve got all these reel to reel tapes of Chicago House stuff. You want to take a look?”
Less than 24 hours later, more than 160 reels were purchased and safely hauled back to the Still Music office and Jerome got to work.
In fact, these reels - that were lost for more than 20 years - contain some incredible stuff that we’ll be releasing in the years to come but right now it’s time to Jack!

Around 50 of these tapes are Dj Mixes that were broadcasted on WGCI and WBMX in the mid to late eighties mostly with the Hot Mix 5.

So Jerome decided to start a series of cassettes titled JACK to share the absolute greatness of these mixes (and to raise enough funds to finance the transfer and licensing of the more crazy stuff that’s in the stack of reels)

Here is our first series with mixes from Frankie Knuckles, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Chicago mystery - Devastating Daryl and a few “unknown” mixes that were too essential to skip.

These mixes were played on the radio only once and were lost until today. This series is an absolute window back to the heydays of Chicago House music.

Almost ten years ago, back in November of 2009, before Let’s Play House was even a humble basement-bar and hotel-lobby party, Jacques Renault quietly released a four-track EP on Hole in the Sky, an imprint run by Canyons’ Leo Thomson and Ryan Grieve, called Favicon , that was both a snapshot of New York City’s glitter-dusted disco-revival haze and the culmination of the first few years of Renault’s career through the club circuit. It quickly became a cult classic and set in motion much of what followed for Renault; it added some fuel to the fire that was Runaway, his project with Marcos Cabral, and helped ready the stage for LPH’s entry.

Long out of print, we thought it’d be fun to reissue it in 2018 as a Record Store Day exclusive. We took the original sleeve and label designs and gave them a minimalistic update, and then added a fifth track to the mix, “Time Machine,” as a bonus. Originally recorded around the same time as the rest, it’s a dizzying, strings-ladden stomper that’ll have your head spinning.

    Tracklisting:

    A1. “Norman’s Fire”
    A2. “Can’t Nobody Love Me”
    B1. “Time Machine”
    B2.“Look at You”
    B3. “Pianos on the Beach”

    1. A. Beat Girl
    2. B. Wonderful

Skyrager presents the first in a series of dance floor edits designed for optimum peak set destruction!
'Beat Girl / Wonderful' is already generating heat on worldwide dance-floors in the skilled hands of crack selectors including Hunee, Lovefingers, Mark E and more.

'Beat Girl' is our A-side, a heavy, throbbing EBM monster... like something discovered on a long lost Belgian white label with it's sharp French femme-fatale monologue and nagging acid bass-line. Trust us, this one sounds ultra-heavy on the system! Things get a little 'sexual' about halfway through and then those guitars kick in, yes, GUITARS, scuzzed out, fuzzed out chords run rampant over this beast and you're gonna love it. This is that sleaze, put your phone away, pick up the amyl and JACK.

'Wonderful' is just that, a ridiculously rare South African (!) cover of Italo overlords Klein & MBO's cut of the same name. There shouldn't be much more to say here, but you should know that it's a stellar combo of hypnotic drum machine rhythms, mind melting synth bass-lines and super dreamy spoken word vocals. It's almost as if she's speaking directly to you as you lose yourself in the smoke and lazers, let go, you know you want to...

    1. A1 Calling Out (7" Edit)
    2. B1 Calling Out (7" Edit Instrumental)

Setting out to make some “happy music”, Sophie Lloyd produced ‘Calling Out’ in a dreary January as an antidote to the pervading doom and gloom of the news, summoning the power of the most joy-filled sound of all, gospel. This no-holds-barred anthem radiates all the live atmosphere of gospel worship in mid flow, with full instrumentation, keyboard breaks and understated kick drum pulling it all together. Bringing in the uplifting voices of soul trio Dames Brown to re-record some old gospel samples was the icing on the cake, adding the last element of authenticity. A new member of the Classic family, Sophie Lloyd’s impeccable knowledge of disco, soul and house shines through in this sparkling record, available on 7” for the very first time.
