The first record in Nixwax's series of limited edition, coloured, vinyl only releases comes from OJsmooth. A true purveyor of juicy grooves, OJ sums up the Nixwax aesthetic perfectly. His tracks have a heavy dose of the UK sound whilst still prescribing to all the features of house that make it the ubiquitously unifying genre.
The title track, 'Everything Means Nothing', has a swelling, vocal infused build up that sets the mood for both the track and the whole EP, but a one riff drop isn't enough for OJ as he pushes onwards and upwards to the kind of heights that you would expect from a man with a key-tar about to burst a blood vessel. The B-side opens with a slightly more slow house feel, but sure enough 'Switchup' does exactly what it says on the tin, with some tasteful yet powerful bassweight that you wouldn't necessarily expect to find on the south side of 120bpm. The ³Everything Means Nothing EP² is rounded off nicely with a slightly different track called 'Lowslung', which offers the same Ronseal appeal that OJsmooth brings whilst maintaining his unmistakable sound.
This is OJsmooth's first release under this moniker and is certainly a name to watch in the future, especially on the strength of this debut. There are more tracks coming in 2012, which will further help to concrete his position in the underground house music scene and keep dancefloors moving across the country.
