The 4th in Tee Mango’s Tribute project, inspired by the much referenced Theo Parrish quote:
Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ.
Everything else stems from that core, that love. With that love, sampling can become a tribute; An expansion on ideas long forgotten, reconstruction, collage.
Time is up is the first track here. Arpeggios shimmer and crisp simple drums hiss and fizz along, until introduction of the classic detroitian vocal and one shot filtered rhodes sample. A deftly simple combination of classic ingredients. Think 90s Inner City meets a DJ Sprinkles era Motor City Drum Ensemble.
You & Them (against the world) is all short looped disco bass and saturated afro moog. Heavy use of delay pedal, and a simple vocal refrain - “It was you & them against the world… and we survive together”. This sounds like Afefe Iku battling it out Paperclip People era Carl Craig.
Love for this series coming from: Leon Vynehall, Gerd Janson, Axel Boman, Palms Trax, Bonobo, Adesse Versions and a heap of others.
These #Tribute releases sell out pretty quick, my hunch is that these will not hang about.
